Arriving back home after a holiday break should always be an experience of relief, not stress. Yet, many individuals find themselves returning to foul-smelling, stale, dusty or even damp and moldy surroundings at home upon their return. Fortunately, proper planning prior to their departure can make a difference in keeping the home pleasant and welcoming during their absence.
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) three main elements affect home air quality: cleanliness, ventilation, and humidity control. Extra moisture, bad airflow and leftover food are some of the most common culprits for producing a bad smell around the house.

There is a lot you can do to ensure your home stays as clean as possible, and one of the easiest things you can do is give it a thorough cleaning before you go on vacation. This means removing any trash that might be around, washing dishes, wiping counters, sweeping the floor, and cleaning bathrooms. This will help get rid of any food and dust that could create an unpleasant smell or even attract vermin.

Humidity is one of the biggest enemies of a fresh-smelling house, as excess humidity leads to mould formation and a musty smell particularly during the monsoon season or in humid environments. According to the recommendations of the US Environmental Protection Agency, it is advisable to maintain a humidity level of 30% to 50% indoors when possible.
If you happen to be living in a humid climate region, you should think of installing a dehumidifier and operating your air conditioner at the economy mode.

Make sure you have checked your refrigerator for any fruits, vegetables, or other perishables that may spoil while you are away. Even one piece left behind can create an odor throughout the whole house. When going on a longer trip, it might even be advisable to clear everything perishable out of the refrigerator and wipe down its interior.

A completely airtight house tends to become very stuffy after some time. When appropriate, keep interior doors partially open so air can flow through them. Clean your exhaust ducts and air filters before leaving the house. Ventilation ensures fresh indoor air while reducing pollutants and moisture in the house.

The curtains, carpets, cushions, bedding, and upholstery of your home can develop an odor over time. The solution to avoiding any bad odor from forming within your fabric materials is by washing your bedsheets, airing out your cushions, and vacuuming your carpets before departing.

It is advised that you check for potential problems associated with water and moisture accumulation near sinks, washers, water filters, and bathrooms before securing your house. Experts state that regulating moisture is one of the best ways to control mould and ensure a healthy indoor atmosphere.
