Winter is at its peak and everyone is bearing the brunt of it

Winter is a delightful season for veggie lovers, but those who have a less resilient immune system feel the opposite. The cold and windy air harbours several pathogens putting human beings at risk of infection. Given the growing cases of COVID and the prevalence of common cold and flu during this season it is important to know the signs of the infection. Knowing the symptoms of a disease is crucial for early detection and timely intervention. Prompt recognition allows individuals to seek medical help, receive appropriate treatment, and prevent the spread of the illness. Early diagnosis improves outcomes, enhances the effectiveness of treatment, and can potentially save lives by addressing health concerns in their early stages.

Classic symptoms of COVID

Let's start with COVID as new variant, JN.1, is spreading across the country and abroad. COVID manifests with a range of symptoms that can vary in severity. Common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath, often resembling those of the flu or common cold. However, individuals infected with the COVID virus may experience fatigue, body aches, headaches, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, and congestion additionally. Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can also occur. Some cases progress to severe respiratory symptoms, marked by difficulty breathing or persistent chest pain.

Classic symptoms of cold

Cold, which is commonly seen during the winter season, presents with a cluster of mild symptoms, mostly, often seen in the respiratory tract. The symptoms of cold include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, coughing, and a scratchy or sore throat. Individuals may experience fatigue, headaches, and a general sense of malaise. While fever is less common in adults, it can occur in children. Symptoms often develop gradually and can vary in intensity.

4/5

Classic symptoms of flu

Another respiratory infection which seems to be similar to cold and COVID is flu and this is too is highly prevalent during the winter season. Influenza, or the flu, is characterized by a sudden onset of more severe respiratory symptoms compared to the common cold. Symptoms include a high fever, chills, muscle aches, fatigue, and a persistent cough. Individuals may also experience a sore throat, headaches, and nasal congestion. The flu can lead to complications like pneumonia, especially in vulnerable populations. Unlike the common cold, the flu often comes with a rapid onset of symptoms.

5/5

Let's not forget the asymptomatic cases

While symptoms can be useful in identifying the disease and get medications on time, it should be noted that several cases of COVID especially are asymptomatic in nature. COVID can present asymptomatically or with mild symptoms in some individuals, making it essential to consider testing and preventive measures even in the absence of severe manifestations. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets, emphasizing the importance of adherence to public health guidelines such as mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and social distancing to curb its transmission. Prompt testing, isolation, and medical attention are crucial if symptoms arise or if there's potential exposure to the virus.
