Yoga Mats: Factors to consider when shopping for the mat

1/6

Things to consider

While a Yoga mat is relatively inexpensive, due care should be given to buying a good quality mat. An ordinary yoga mat will wear out easily due to the pressure of your feet, shoes, or body while working out on the same mat every day. A good yoga mat will support you in your asanas and exercises, they will give you good support and grip. The sponginess of the mat will help balance out the applied pressure and its thickness will ensure a comfortable workout experience as it will provide you cushioning. Ensure these things when you consider buying a Yoga mat.

2/6

Material

Many yoga mats on the market are crafted from recycled plastics like EVA or PVC, they prevent sweat absorption. While these mats are easy to clean, they often lack the necessary grip during exercises and may trigger skin irritations in some individuals. They also are not very environmentally friendly. Inversely, cork yoga mats have a negligible carbon footprint. TPE mats can be chosen as they have excellent absorbency and durability.

3/6

The texture of a yoga mat

The texture of a yoga mat is crucial for providing the necessary grip during practice. Slippery material will lead to inefficient performance of various asanas. While extremely coarse textures will be very uncomfortable. A balanced texture is essential because discomfort can be a distracting factor hindering one's full potential. Another crucial aspect is the sponginess of a yoga mat, a feature immediately noticeable when trying out a new mat. The degree of sponginess, or how well a mat responds to applied pressure, can greatly influence one's yoga experience. PVC mats are a popular choice for sponginess, while more firm options like cork are preferable for carpeted surfaces.

4/6

Thickness of the mat

This is an important factor because the greater the thickness better the cushioning for your palms, knees, and other contact areas. Maximum pressure is exerted from these areas and they also face friction from the surface. To ensure these areas don't get bruised a comfortable and thick mat should be chosen. Its downside is that a thicker mat reduces the connection you feel with the floor beneath, which can be disorienting for some and lead to balance issues. Thin mats are travel-friendly as they can be easily packed and are lightweight.

Style

This is an often ignored factor but is very crucial in your long-term fitness journey. You would be spending maximum time on it while working out. If the color or pattern is too dull you will get bored after some time. To break the monotony you can opt for a yoga mat with vibrant colors and patterns. These days yoga mats come in a wide range of styles, some even have motivational lines embossed on them. You can check these out if you are just starting out your fitness regime and are looking for more consistency in it.

6/6

Budget

After you have factored in all aspects come to this point. Set a budget a try finding a suitable yoga mat within that range. If you are exceeding it by some points, you don't need to remove it from your wishlist. Maybe save some money and buy it. A good-quality but expensive mat will be a long-term investment but a low-grade but cheaper mat that will become useless once it's worn out will just add to the waste. Before buying an expensive mat be really sure you are going to be committed to your workout and not take it casually.
