5 early signs of an unhealthy gut, as revealed by Harvard trained Gastroenterologist

Our digestive system is a vital function of our body, which maintains our overall health. The digestive system breaks down food while extracting essential nutrients, and it defends our body against infections. Sometimes, the health of our gut experiences disturbances, which produce multiple adverse effects on our body. Early detection of unhealthy gut symptoms enables us to start recovery procedures before conditions become severe. Dr Saurabh Sethi, Gastroenterologist, trained at Harvard, reveals 5 early signs of an unhealthy gut…

2/7

Frequent bloating

The sensation of bloating occurs when your stomach becomes swollen after eating, which produces discomfort and gas. The gut experiences problems with food digestion and excessive growth of dangerous bacteria, leads to bloating. This occurs because the stomach produces gases which expand its size. Dr Sethi says that when you experience persistent bloating after eating small amounts of food, it could indicate your gut has an imbalance. The stomach discomfort will interfere with your daily routines while creating post-meal discomfort. Early detection of bloating enables you to start a treatment plan which will improve digestion and minimise associated symptoms.

3/7

Irregular bowel movements

The frequency or rarity of bowel movements together with irregular patterns, indicates that your gut health is compromised, says Dr Sethi. The condition of constipation produces hard stools that occur infrequently, while diarrhea creates loose watery stools. Your digestive system shows signs of malfunction, when you experience either of these symptoms. The gut's inability to properly absorb water and nutrients disrupts the normal bowel movement patterns, which require proper balance. Your body experiences confusion and discomfort when bowel movements change suddenly or persistently, because it indicates bacterial imbalance and inflammation in your gut. Early treatment of these irregularities, will enhance your digestive system function while promoting better overall health.

4/7

Unexplained fatigue

The persistent feeling of tiredness without any apparent cause might stem from problems within your digestive system, says Dr Sethi. The presence of an unhealthy gut leads to inflammation, which prevents proper nutrient digestion of essential energy-producing substances like iron and vitamins. The excessive growth of harmful bacteria in your gut produces toxic substances, which create negative effects on your body and brain functions. The body experiences reduced energy levels and reduced ability to focus. The improvement of gut health leads to better energy levels and mental clarity, which enhances daily life quality and productivity.

5/7

Weakened immunity

The majority of your immune system, resides inside your digestive system. Your body becomes more susceptible to infections when your gut health deteriorates, says Dr Sethi. Your body becomes more prone to infections and illnesses, because your immune system weakens. A balanced gut enables your body to create essential immune cells and antibodies. Your body needs proper gut care to develop strong immunity, because weak immunity makes you more susceptible to illnesses and slows down your healing process.

6/7

Food intolerances

Food sensitivities emerge when your digestive system becomes unhealthy. The breakdown of gut lining integrity, and inflammation enables food particles to pass through the bloodstream which triggers immune system responses. The most common food intolerances occur when people react to dairy products, gluten and spicy foods. Your gut barrier shows weakness when you experience stomach pain, diarrhea, rashes and headaches following food consumption. Early identification of food intolerances enables you to control symptoms better, while selecting food choices that promote gut lining recovery.
