Excessive junk food intake can have dangerous results!

When it comes to eating out or ready-to-eat foods, we often fall for junk food, but a recent study reveals that mouth-watering junk food can leave you deaf and blind. The journal Annals of Internal Medicine has mentioned about a teenager from UK, who reportedly went deaf and blind due to his junk food diet. His case has been published to raise awareness about the importance of healthy diet.

What actually happened?

If reports are to be believed, the 17-year-old, described as a “fussy eater,” was suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency since he was 14 and was under treatment. When he turned 15, his hearing and vision capacity decreased, and it got worst with time and according to Live Science, at 17, he was declared blind. The tests reveal that his optic nerve was damaged due to low levels of copper and vitamin D and as doctors enquired about his eating habits, it was revealed that his daily diet consisted of fries, chips, white bread, and processed meat. He was eventually diagnosed with nutritional optic neuropathy (NON). At present, he is suffering from an eating disorder called ARFID (avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder). In this, the patient avoids food with a certain texture, smell, taste or appearance, or only eats it at a certain temperature.

What is NON?

Nutritional Optic Neuropathy, also known as Deficiency Optic Neuropathy is basically a dysfunction of the optic nerve that happens because of improper dietary content of certain essential nutrients that are necessary for normal functioning of the nerve fibres. According to experts, it happens because of folic acid and vitamin B complex deficiency associated with malnutrition or poor dietary habits.
