Chhath Puja and foods

Chhath is an ancient Hindu Vedic festival, dedicated to the solar deity Surya and Shashthi devi (Chhathi Maiya). This year, the festival will take place from October 25 to October 28, featuring four days of rituals and festivities. The festival is celebrated with great devotion across Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal. The 4-day festival begins with Nahay Khay, followed by Kharna, Sandhya Arghya, and Usha Arghya. During these 4 days, certain traditional foods play a crucial role in the pooja rituals. Kaddhu Bhaat


This combo is made on the first day of the 4-day festival and is meant to purify the body. It consists of bottle gourd cooked in ghee and is served with steamed rice cooked on mud chulha. (Image: Instagram/foodiesofblr)

Daab Nimbu



It is rich in vital nutrients and minerals, which helps nourish skin and maintain natural oils.

Rasiyao


Another kheer recipe, which is made with water, rice, jaggery, ginger, and cardamom powder.

Thekua



Thekua refers to deep-fried crunchy discs made with wheat flour, ghee, sugar or jaggery, cardamom powder, grated coconut, and nuts.

Kasar



It's a combination of powdered rice and jaggery, which keeps the body warm during the winter season.

Green Chana


Rich in fiber, protein, and vitamins, green chana are soaked overnight, and then sautéed in ghee with cumin seeds and green chillies and served as prasad.

Rice Kheer


It’s a delectable combination of full cream milk, rice, nuts, and sugar.

Coconut


It’s an important element of Chhath Pooja basket and is marked with swastika and Om sign using vermilion. It is a versatile superfood packed with healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It provides quick energy and supports heart health by improving good cholesterol (HDL) levels.

Another important element of Chhath Pooja basket is banana, which is later distributed as Prasad among devotees.
