Harmful foods for arthritis patients

Arthritis is basically an autoimmune disease that affects joints and causes bone pain. Even though older adults have a higher chance of developing this disease, several young cases of arthritis too are being reported nowadays. There are several food items which aid arthritis pain without even you knowing it. If you too are suffering from arthritis, here are some food items you need to strike off from your diet

​Refined sugar

The first and the foremost thing that you need to eliminate from your diet is sugar. Avoid eating chocolates, candies, cakes, shakes, cold drinks and all kinds of processed sweets. Observe your diet strictly and start by cutting down on excess sugar. A study conducted with 217 people with rheumatoid arthritis noted that among 20 foods, sugar loaded soda and desserts most frequently worsened the pain and symptoms of arthritis .

​Red meat

Another food item which is associated with increased inflammation in the body is red meat. In the above given study done with 217 people, it was also found that consumption of red meat worsen the symptoms of arthritis. This is why you must stay away from beef, mutton, goat and lamb meat.

​Deep fried foods

Deep fried foods are inflammatory in nature and can aggravate the symptoms of arthritis. Deep frying, pan frying or even shallow frying food items in oil makes them rich in omega 6 fatty acids which is specifically dangerous for people suffering from arthritis. A diet rich in omega 6 fatty acids and low on omega 3 fatty acids can increase inflammation. Avoid oily foods and include limited oil in your daily diet if you have immense arthritis pain.

​Excessive salt

If you are habitual of sprinkling some extra salt on top of your curries or veggies, you need to stop that habit right now. A diet with excess of salt not only increases blood pressure but also worsens arthritis. Avoid processed and canned foods as they already have excess of sodium in them.

​Must have foods

You must fill your diet with all types of fruits such as banana, oranges, pomegranate, grapes, peaches, apples and other seasonal fruits. If you wish to switch from vegetable oil, as it has omega fatty acids, olive oil is a healthier option for cooking. Calcium rich dairy products such as milk, curd and buttermilk must be consumed to strengthen your bones.

Ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha too helps in preventing pain and strengthens bones. Opt for fishes like salmon and sardines. They are loaded with omega 3 fatty acids and help in balancing out excess omega 6 fatty acids in the body.
