5 ways to serve hummus with Indian food

Hummus might be Middle Eastern by birth, but it fits beautifully into Indian kitchens too. Creamy, nutty and full of protein, it’s made from chickpeas, or as they’re called here, kabuli chana. Chana already stars in chaats, curries and pulaos, so giving hummus a desi spin isn’t much of a stretch. It’s comforting, filling and surprisingly versatile. It is also rich in fibre, full of good fats and offers a solid protein boost without needing anything complicated. If you’ve only ever dipped pita into it, here’s how to get a little more playful.

2/6

With stuffed parathas

Replace your regular butter or pickle with a big spoon of hummus on the side. It works like magic with aloo, gobhi or even paneer parathas. The creamy texture cools down the spice, and its earthy taste pairs well with the bold flavours. It’s a healthy swap that doesn’t compromise on comfort.

3/6

Inside your frankie or wrap

Spread a thick layer of hummus inside your roti or paratha before stuffing in your favourite sabzi. Whether it’s leftover bhindi, jeera aloo or some crispy soya chunks, hummus adds creaminess and depth. It also helps hold everything together, making your roll juicy and satisfying.

4/6

As a dip for pakoras

Move over chutney, hummus is ready for tea time. Serve it as a dip for onion bhajiyas, moong dal fritters, or even paneer fingers. Add a pinch of chaat masala or a swirl of tamarind sauce on top and you’ve got a snack that’s both nourishing and new.

5/6

Alongside pulao or veg biryani

This might sound unexpected, but a spoon of hummus on the side of your rice dish can really bring balance. Its mild nutty taste works beautifully with the masala in the rice. Plus, it helps cool down the heat and gives a nice protein lift to your plate.

6/6

As a sandwich spread with desi fillings

Skip the mayo and layer your bread with hummus before adding slices of tomato, cucumber, boiled potato or even leftover chana masala. It turns a simple sandwich into a meal that’s creamy, energising and full of flavour. Add some mint chutney if you enjoy a bit of extra zing.
