How these foods detoxify the liver

The liver plays a crucial role in the human body. It acts as the body’s natural detoxifier, filtering out toxins from the blood, breaking down harmful substances, and metabolizing drugs and alcohol. The liver also plays a crucial role in digestion by producing bile, which helps break down fats and absorb nutrients. But sadly, the erratic lifestyle habits have put the liver's health at risk. In a recent YouTube video, Dr. Hansa Yogendra, who runs the page called The Yoga Institute, explained easy home remedies that can help detoxify the liver naturally. Scroll down to read the details.

Turmeric

Dr Hansa calls it a wonder spice. It helps in healing the liver from damage and also boosts enzymes and thereby reduces the load on liver cells. She suggests either you consume turmeric at night by putting it in milk or in the morning, take little honey, put little turmeric and make a paste out of it and eat it.

Milk thistles

As per Dr Hansa, it is a wonder drug, which shows quick recovery in liver ailments and also helps prevent the damage in liver. As per her video, the active in milk thistles is silymarin, it is a compound which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This is a plant, which is not easily available in India, but nowadays you can get it in the form of a capsule or best is to consume the seeds once a day.

4/6

Garlic

As per Dr Hansa, garlic activates liver enzymes and helps in removing toxins from the body. It has compounds like allicin and selenium, which protect the liver from any toxic damage. All you have to do is, take 2 cloves of garlic at night before going to bed or start adding these garlic cloves in your daily food.

Right food habits

According to Ayurveda, digestion and metabolism are carried out by two different fires. They are called agni and pitta. Liver is a fiery organ anf anything hot is not good for the liver. Alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, spicy foods, non-veg, and packaged foods are not good for the liver and one should avoid consuming them. She recommends consuming foods like aloe vera, neem, amla, and karela, as Ayurveda considers them good for liver health.

What else to eat?

In the video, she explains adding walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, spinach, fenugreek leaves in the daily diet, as they help detoxify the liver naturally. She also suggests consuming beetroots, carrots, apples on a daily basis to boost liver health. These foods are rich in antioxidants, fibre, and chlorophyll, which support gentle cleansing, improve bile flow, and reduce inflammation. She recommends simple tweaks like adding a handful to sabzi, salads, or mid-meal snacks instead of taking strong “detox” drinks or supplements.
