In India, the birthday of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India, i.e. September 5, 1888, has been celebrated as Teacher's Day since 1962.

Why September 5 is celebrated as Teachers Day
After Dr. Radhakrishnan became second President of India, some of his former students came to him and sought his permission to celebrate his birthday on September 5. Dr. Radhakrishnan politely declined their request and suggested them that instead of celebrating his birthday, it would be his proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers' Day. Since then his birthday is being celebrated as Teachers' Day in India.
Teachers Day: Speeches by famous personalities
APJ Abdul Kalam: The former late president of India, APJ Abdul Kalam was the teacher we all needed in life. With his simple words, he was able to motivate many to pursue their dreams. One of his very significant speeches during his tenure as the president of India, he spoke about the students need to question. As quoted in the speech he said, “Educationist should build the capacities of the spirit of inquiry, creativity, entrepreneurial and moral leadership among students and become their role model.” APJ Abdul Kalam was also pro-liberalisation, therefore his speech also included this: If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.
Narendra Modi: The current prime minister and eminent leader, Narendra Modi is known to be extra specific with his words. In his 2014 speech made on teachers day, PM Modi spoke about how a student is the identity of a teacher. Some key pointers from his speech are: Students spend most of their hours with teachers, thus they have a huge role in the life of students. In villages, grandfathers naturally assume the role of a teacher.Other than this, he also spoke about Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the man after who teacher’s day is celebrated. PM Modi was quoted saying, “Youngsters did not live during the time of Dr. Radhakrishnan but you have seen Dr. Kalam. He always wanted to be remembered as a teacher. How unique was his passion that he never left students for a moment in his life. The most profound thought in PM Modi’s speech was: It is the teachers that make the generations.
Pranab Mukherjee: Former president of India, Pranab Mukherjee is known to be man of few words. His 2015 teacher’s day speech was broadcasted across schools. Some of the key points of his speech were: A teacher gives himself to the student and the job of a student is to draw from him as much as possible. President Mukherjee went on to speak about his journey as a student and how he had to travel a distance every day to reach school. He also went to tell the students about the political history of India.
Chanakya: Chanakya, a minister in the Maurya dynasty and one of the greatest teachers off all times, spoke about the need for teachers in nation building. He said that this nation will become independent, liberal and forward, when the teachers it has guides it properly. A teacher will become successful when he will be able to build the character of a person more than anything. He went on to speak about how a teacher was unable to teach his students properly, if they did not understand the importance of nation building.
