Green habits readers and writers should inculcate

With the planet's environmental condition deteriorating at an alarming rate, small changes in our habits can make a big difference. Our love for paper and paper products (in case you didn't know, millions of trees are cut down to produce paper each year) is also a big contributing factor for this. Besides recycling paper waste, here are some tips readers and writers can follow to make their habits greener.

Get an e-reader

Though the familiar feel a physical book provides is irreplaceable, true readers know that once they're lost in the words, the medium doesn't matter. An e-reader reduces the amount of deforestation your purchases are responsible for and also affords you the freedom of carrying your entire library with you, wherever you go.

 Borrow books

If e-readers are out of the question, then borrow books. Public libraries are always good for this but friends with similar tastes are usually willing to share books if you promise to take care of them. If you live close to your family and they read too, a shared family library is a must.

Buy second-hand books

If you must have your own copy of some books, then consider buying them second hand. As most readers treat their books reverentially, even second-hand books are likely to be in good condition, especially if you find a good shop that transports and stores them well. This way your purchases will have less of a negative environmental impact.

 Start writing digitally

Most readers enjoy writing too and once they make the switch to digital writing, it's hard to find time to hunt for pen and paper. With the writing speed offered by a keypad and the portability gadgets bring, writing becomes simply addictive. There are several apps catered to specific writing needs like note-taking or journaling and they often back up online, so you can write across gadgets.

Make sure you buy notebooks of recycled paper

If you just don't feel as inspired by typing as you do while writing on paper, then make sure you buy notebooks made from paper that has been recycled or that is made of an eco-friendly source. Some companies make paper out of leftover cotton fibers and other such sustainable materials.

 Use whiteboards/blackboards for lists

If you need to write down your daily to-do or shopping list or similar temporary notes, then consider doing them on a blackboard or whiteboard. They're available in many sizes and some are specifically formatted for planning. While whiteboards are easier to write on, blackboards are more eco-friendly because markers are made of plastic and chemicals while chalk is just calcium and it's less polluting.

 Use refillable pens

Pens are so easily available and mostly fall under the category of plastic disposables. Using a refillable pen cuts down on plastic pollution greatly.

 Take advantage of natural light

Many writers love to work at night, for it's easier to read or write in peace when the world is silent and distraction free. However, trying to adjust your habits to take advantage of daylight hours is bound to save a lot of electricity and maybe, you'll find your creativity can peak at a different hour too.
