5 Alta designs for Durga Puja

Alta is a bright red or dark pink liquid dye traditionally applied to the hands and feet during religious festivals and weddings in Bengal. During Durga Puja, women use Alta patterns to decorate their palms and feet as a form of cultural expression, a beauty ritual, and a way to invoke auspiciousness. Alta beautifully complements the festival’s décor, costumes, and devotional spirit.

2/6

Circular or mandala-centred patterns

This style features a large central circle (mandala) on the palm or back of the hand, surrounded by concentric rings, dots, and radial elements. It creates a symmetrical, balanced look that draws attention to the centre - perfect for those who want a traditional yet bold design without filling every bit of space.

3/6

Floral and leafy motifs

Floral Alta designs use petal shapes, vines, leaves, and blossoms across the hand or foot. They can be delicate or bold, with organic curves lending softness and elegance, making them ideal for festive occasions. These designs are often paired with simple dots or curved lines that frame the flowers.

4/6

Minimalistic lines or simplistic borders

For a more modern or understated look, this style uses clean lines around the wrists or ankles, modest borders, and avoids heavy filling. It might include one or two bands or a border near the fingers or toe line. This is great for comfort, speed, and maintaining elegance without looking too crowded.

5/6

Mehendi and Alta fusion

This hybrid style combines the intricacy of mehendi with the vibrancy of Alta. For example, Alta may be used as a base or highlight, while detailed mehendi patterns are layered around or over it. The contrast of red Alta against the darker mehendi lines creates depth and visually striking designs.

6/6

Feet-focused designs

Here, Alta patterns are concentrated on the feet, such as colouring the toe tips, creating anklet-style borders around the ankle, or adding motifs on the soles. A central design on the top of the foot, with decorative elements radiating outward, adds charm. Since feet are often visible under saris or lehengas, this style beautifully accentuates both footwear and drapery.
