West Bengal Election Results 2026 Highlights: ‘BJP’s Poriborton has arrived with a bulldozer’ - TMC alleges office vandalised near New Market

West Bengal Election Result 2026 Live Updates: West Bengal has entered verdict day, with counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections now underway across 293 constituencies, bringing to a close a prolonged and intense campaign. The focus remains on whether the All India Trinamool Congress can retain power or if the Bharatiya Janata Party can make a significant breakthrough in the state.

Tight security at counting centres

Counting is being conducted at 77 centres under a multi-layered security grid, with central forces, CCTV surveillance and a large number of observers deployed to ensure a smooth and transparent process. The Election Commission has reiterated that strongrooms housing EVMs remain under strict, round-the-clock security, dismissing allegations of tampering raised in the run-up to counting.

Record turnout amid SIR concerns

The elections, held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, recorded a voter turnout of 92.47 per cent, the highest in the state since Independence. Repolling in select booths also saw strong participation. However, the turnout has been viewed in the context of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which led to the removal of nearly 90 lakh names, making its impact a key factor in the final outcome.

High-decibel campaign by key players

The campaign saw top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, leading an aggressive push against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party, focusing on issues such as corruption, governance and law and order. TMC, in response, centred its campaign on welfare delivery, regional identity and criticism of the SIR exercise.

Opposition looks to regain ground

Apart from the two main contenders, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress are also looking to regain ground after their limited presence in the previous election.

Results for 293 seats today

Results are being declared for 293 seats, as polling in the Falta constituency was countermanded and will be held later this month. With high voter participation and a charged political backdrop, the outcome is expected to significantly shape the state’s political trajectory.

West Bengal election results 2026: Early trends show BJP leading in Jhargram seat with over 900 votes
Early trends of the Election Commission of India (ECI) showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading in the Jhargram Assembly constituency in West Bengal during the first hour of vote counting.

BJP candidate Lakshmi Kanta Sau was leading with over 900 votes, while Trinamool Congress candidate Mongal Saren was trailing, as per the ECI trends as of 9:30 a.m.

The counting of votes cast in the two-phase Assembly polls in West Bengal began at 8 a.m. on Monday, with postal ballots counted first.

On Monday, the counting is on for only 293 of 294 Assembly constituencies in the state, since the ECI, on Saturday, announced repolling for the entire Falta Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district on May 21, the results for which will be declared on May 24.

This time, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has brought about some changes in the counting pattern. In previous elections, counting of votes started only after the counting of postal ballots was completed fully.

However, this time, counting of only postal ballots will be done for the first 30 minutes, that is, from 8 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. From 8.30 a.m. onwards, the postal ballots and the EVM votes will be counted simultaneously.

"The counting of the postal ballots only for the first 30 minutes is to ensure that the counting of the postal ballots is completed before the completion of the counting of EVM votes. In case, in any counting room, if the counting of postal ballots is not completed before the last two rounds of counting, the counting of EVM votes will be kept on hold for some time, and only postal ballots will be counted during that period. The EVM vote counting will resume after the counting of postal ballots is completed," said an insider from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).

He also said that by following this new process, a clear trend in the results will be available by noon.

The contest in West Bengal is mainly between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the principal opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the last elections in 2021, Trinamool Congress ended tally with 216 seats, followed by the BJP at 77 and All India Secular Front (AISF) at one.

Neither Congress nor the CPI(M)-led Left Front, despite contesting the polls in an alliance, could win from a single constituency. This time, the main challenge for both Congress and Left Front is to open their accounts again in terms of presence in the state Assembly. This time, Left Front and Congress have contested independently, although Left Front had a seat-sharing arrangement with AISF.

The two-phase Assembly polls in West Bengal this time were conducted on April 23 and April 29, with a record turnout of nearly 93 per cent. Most of the exit poll predictions this time, barring two, have predicted the end of the 15-year Trinamool Congress regime and the beginning of the BJP rule in West Bengal.

West Bengal election results 2026: 'Lotus will bloom there too' - BJP’s Shehzad Poonawalla confident of Bengal win, NDA gains elsewhere
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Monday expressed confidence over the party's electoral prospects in West Bengal, stating that "lotus will bloom there too," while also projecting a broader NDA performance across other regions.

Speaking to ANI, Poonawalla said, "Everyone's eyes are on West Bengal today. I can say that the clouds will clear, the sun will rise, and the lotus will bloom there too."
He further linked the party's performance in West Bengal to what he described as dissatisfaction with the current state government.

He added, "The way Mamata Banerjee has run a government of misrule for fifteen years, the people of West Bengal were determined to oust this government..."
Extending his remarks to other states, Poonawalla also expressed confidence that the BJP and NDA would perform strongly in Assam and southern states, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, claiming the alliance would secure substantial mandates there as well.

"The way the Bharatiya Janata Party has worked in Assam, we're going to score a hat-trick there. The government will be formed for the third time. Be it Kerala, Tamil Nadu, or Puducherry, you'll see the NDA forming a government with a landslide majority there too," he further said.

West Bengal poll results 2026: Security tightened across Kolkata as counting centres gear up amid political tensions
As West Bengal headed into counting day for its high-stakes 294-seat Assembly elections, security was intensified across multiple counting centres in Kolkata.

Bhabanipur, one of the most closely watched constituencies due to the political contest involving Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, saw heavy police deployment outside the counting centre at Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls' High School. Similar security arrangements were visible at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium and the office of the Chief Electoral Officer.

Counting agents from both the All India Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party continued to arrive at the Bhabanipur counting centre amid tight security.
Tensions briefly flared outside the venue as polling agents from the two parties engaged in a verbal argument. TMC agents alleged they were not permitted to carry basic items such as files and pens inside, while BJP agents were allowed to do so.

"They are not allowing us to take files or pens inside, but the BJP polling agents are allowed to take them inside. Rules should be the same for everyone. We are the people of Mamata Banerjee. There is no bigger identity than this," a TMC polling agent said.

In response, a BJP polling agent rejected the claim and accused TMC workers of not complying with entry requirements. "They are not carrying their ID cards. We are wearing our ID cards. They are creating a ruckus unnecessarily. BJP is winning with a majority in West Bengal and even in Bhabanipur," the BJP polling agent said.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India said it has completed all preparations for counting day and shared visuals from the counting centre at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University in Ballygunge.

"All preparations in place for counting day West Bengal Elections 2026 Glimpses of Media Centre of 161 Ballygunge Assembly Constituency under DEO Kolkata South at the Counting Venue at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University," the ECI said in a post on X.

Apart from West Bengal, counting of votes will also take place in Tamil Nadu, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The process will begin with postal ballots at 8:00 am, followed by EVM counting from 8:30 am, with real-time updates available on ECINET and the official Election Commission portal.

In West Bengal, the political atmosphere remained charged until the final hours. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari struck a spiritual note, saying, "I offered prayers at the Lakshmi Narayan Temple. God is with us. A government that protects the interests of Sanatan Dharma is coming."

The BJP has expressed confidence about unseating the ruling TMC, while the latter remains firm in its claim of returning to power. Party leader Kunal Ghosh said, "Mamata Banerjee is coming back with more than 200 seats," and also raised concerns about arrangements for counting agents, including lack of basic facilities.

Security continued to remain tight across Kolkata, with senior CRPF officials inspecting strong rooms at Netaji Indoor Stadium. BJP workers were also seen gathering outside counting centres, saying they were there to "safeguard EVMs," reflecting the heightened tensions between rival camps. Despite competing claims, election authorities have maintained that counting will be conducted in a "free and fair" manner.

West Bengal poll results 2026: 'Same arrangements everywhere, no issues at all' - Bengal CEO assures smooth counting with uniform security
As West Bengal heads into counting day, Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal said the Election Commission of India has put in place uniform arrangements across all counting centres, backed by a three-tier security system to ensure a smooth process.

"The arrangements are the same everywhere, there are no sensitive or non-sensitive counting centres...There is a three-tier security. Besides CAPF, there are the Armed Police and the State Police. All kinds of arrangements are in place. There is no issue at all," he said.

Agarwal also addressed concerns over power supply, stating that the Election Commission has coordinated with the concerned authorities to avoid disruptions.
"Power cuts are not in the hands of Election Commission. It is up to the Power Department. I have made all requests for the Power Department to provide an uninterrupted power supply. Generators are available too, there will be no issue," he said.

Counting of votes in West Bengal, along with Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry, will begin at 8:00 am on Monday. The exercise will start with postal ballots, followed by EVM counting from 8:30 am, with round-wise updates available on ECINET and the official Election Commission portal.

Exit polls have indicated a close contest in West Bengal across 294 seats between the BJP and the All India Trinamool Congress. While some projections, including Chanakya Strategies and Matrize, suggest an advantage for the BJP, others point to a tighter race with the TMC retaining a substantial share. Smaller parties are expected to have a limited role in the final outcome.

West Bengal poll results 2026: 'Hopeful of Left to perform well' - CPI(M)’s Bikash Bhattacharya eyes shift in Bengal mood ahead of counting

Ahead of vote counting, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and Jadavpur candidate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya expressed optimism about the Left Front’s prospects in the West Bengal Assembly elections, pointing to growing public dissatisfaction with the All India Trinamool Congress government.

"It is the result day by day. I am hopeful of the Left having performed well this time...There should be a change. Common people are upset with the Govt. Let's see what the results would be," he said.

Bhattacharya is contesting against TMC’s incumbent MLA Debabrata Majumder and BJP candidate Sarbari Mukherjee in the Jadavpur constituency.

Counting of votes across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry is set to begin at 8:00 am. The process will start with postal ballots, followed by EVM counting from 8:30 am, with round-wise updates to be made available on ECINET and the official Election Commission portal.

West Bengal, one of the most closely watched battlegrounds, remained politically charged until the final hours before counting. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari invoked a religious note, saying, "I offered prayers at the Lakshmi Narayan Temple. God is with us. A government that protects the interests of Sanatan Dharma is coming."

The BJP has projected confidence in dislodging the ruling TMC, with several leaders indicating that a shift in power is likely.

Meanwhile, the TMC has maintained that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will return to power comfortably. Party leader Kunal Ghosh said, "Mamata Banerjee is coming back with more than 200 seats," while also raising concerns over arrangements for counting agents, including alleged lack of food and water.

The ruling party also flagged security concerns, with Mamata Banerjee urging workers to stay alert amid claims of power outages and suspicious activity near strong rooms.

Adding to the political tension, the Election Commission of India ordered repolling in all 285 booths of the Falta constituency, citing "severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process."

Reacting to the decision, Bhattacharya said, "Corrupt practices were adopted in Falta. It shows that the Election Commission officers were also involved...If Election Commission officers get involved too, what can we say?"

Exit polls have indicated a close contest across the 294 seats in West Bengal between the BJP and the TMC. While some projections, including Chanakya Strategies and Matrize, suggest an edge for the BJP, others point to a tighter race with the TMC retaining a substantial share. Smaller parties are expected to have a limited impact on the final outcome.

West Bengal poll results 2026: TMC, BJP agents clash ahead of West Bengal counting of votes
A tense situation unfolded outside the counting centre at Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls' High School in the Bhowanipore Assembly constituency on Monday, as West Bengal entered its verdict day under tight security.

A verbal altercation broke out between counting agents of the All India Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the commencement of vote counting for the 2026 Assembly elections.

Counting for all 293 constituencies is set to begin at 8 am, marking the end of a prolonged and high-stakes electoral contest in the state.

According to a TMC worker at the site, the dispute stemmed from alleged differences in permissions granted to agents inside the counting centre.

"They are not allowing us to take files or pens inside, but the BJP polling agents are allowed to take them inside. Rules should be the same for everyone. We are the people of Mamata Banerjee. There is no bigger identity than this," the worker told ANI.

Responding to the allegation, a BJP counting agent said procedures were being followed and accused the TMC side of creating unnecessary disruption.

"They are not carrying their ID cards. We are wearing our ID cards. They are creating a ruckus unnecessarily. BJP is winning with a majority in West Bengal and even in Bhabanipur," the BJP counting agent told ANI.

Counting is expected to proceed under strict arrangements across the state, beginning with postal ballots at 8:00 am, followed by EVM counting from 8:30 am. Results will be updated in real time on ECINET and the official election portal.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal warned against any disruption, assuring a transparent and peaceful counting process backed by extensive security measures.

In multiple briefings ahead of counting day, Agarwal said a three-tier security system has been put in place across counting centres. Around 200 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed specifically for counting duties, alongside State Police and State Armed Police personnel. CCTV cameras have also been installed outside counting halls to monitor movement.

Election Result West Bengal 2026: 'Keep watch. File complaints'—Mamata Banerjee alleges power cuts, suspicious activity near strong room
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee urged TMC workers to stay alert throughout the night, alleging incidents of power cuts and suspicious movement near strong rooms ahead of vote counting.

In a post on X, she said reports from districts such as Hooghly, Nadia, Burdwan, and parts of Kolkata indicated phased load-shedding, CCTV disruptions, and unusual movement of vehicles near strong rooms.

Banerjee asked party workers to closely guard strong rooms, remain vigilant overnight, and immediately report any suspicious activity. She also claimed that CCTV footage should be demanded and complaints should be filed without delay if irregularities are observed.

She further alleged that these incidents were being carried out at the behest of the BJP.

Her statement comes just hours before vote counting begins across West Bengal at 8.00 am with postal ballots, followed by EVM counting at 8.30 am, with results to be updated in real time on official election platforms.

West Bengal Election Results 2026: How will SIR influence the 2026 Bengal elections?
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls could play a significant role in shaping the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, particularly in tightly contested constituencies, though it is unlikely to determine the overall outcome.

Reports suggest that approximately 89–91 lakh voters—about 11.6% of the electorate—have been removed from the rolls, with some constituencies seeing deletions larger than previous victory margins. The impact is expected to be most noticeable in urban and semi-urban regions, including parts of Kolkata, North Bengal, and border districts, where even small shifts in voter lists and turnout could influence results.

'How are VVPATs going away?': BJP's Locket Chatterjee flags irregularity ahead of Bengal counting
North 24 Parganas (West Bengal): BJP leader Locket Chatterjee on Monday alleged irregularities ahead of vote counting in West Bengal, claiming that a VVPAT machine from Noapara was being moved under suspicious circumstances with the involvement of local police and administrative officials.

Speaking to ANI, Chatterjee said party workers intercepted the movement of the VVPAT, raising questions over the handling of election equipment.

"We will know the results in a few hours. BJP is coming to power in West Bengal. Today, the VVPAT of Noapara was found somewhere else. The BDO and the police were taking it away. Our workers have seized it. Why did this happen? How is the VVPAT going away?" she said.

She further claimed that such incidents could be attempts to disrupt the counting process.

"These people want something to happen that will stop the counting of votes. The public has given its verdict, which is in our favour," Chatterjee added.

Earlier, the Election Commission of India issued a clarification after VVPAT slips allegedly found discarded in Subhashnagar under Ichapur Nilganj Panchayat in the Madhyamgram Assembly segment, linked to booth number 29 of Noapara Assembly, surfaced hours before counting.

The poll body said the slips were not connected to actual voting and were instead used during a mock poll conducted before election day.

"Upon examination, it has been found that the VVPAT paper slips shown are related to mock poll done before poll day and are not related to the actual poll conducted on the day of voting. Further, a detailed enquiry has been initiated, and a formal complaint has been lodged for verification and necessary action," the Election Commission said.

Counting of votes across the state is scheduled to begin at 8:00 am with postal ballots, followed by EVM counting from 8:30 am. Results will be updated in real time on ECINET and the official election portal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the lotus is now blooming from Gangotri to Gangasagar following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s historic victory in West Bengal, and urged all parties to focus on change, not revenge, and prioritise the state’s future over fear.

Addressing party workers at the BJP headquarters after the Assembly poll wins in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry, Modi said it was a significant day that signals a bright future for the country.

"It is a day of trust in the great democracy of India, trust in the politics of performance, trust in the resolve of stability, trust in the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat.

"I bow before the people of West Bengal, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Keralam," he said at the victory celebration event, where BJP president Nitin Nabin, Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, among others, were present.

Modi recalled that on November 14 last year, after the Bihar election results, he had told party workers that the Ganga flows onward from Bihar to Ganga Sagar in West Bengal.

"And today, with victory in West Bengal, from Gangotri (Uttarakhand) to Ganga Sagar (West Bengal), it is nothing but the lotus in full bloom. Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal today, in these states surrounding Mother Ganga, there are BJP-NDA governments," he said.

Democracy, not fear, prevailed in what he described as a festival of democracy in West Bengal.

When the BJP has won in Bengal, there should be talk of 'badlav' (change) not 'badla' (revenge), 'bhavishya' (future) not 'bhay' (fear), he said.

The prime minister added that winning and losing are natural in politics, but the people of the five states have demonstrated why India is regarded as the mother of democracy.

"Democracy is not just a system for us; it is the river of traditions in our veins. Today, not only has India's democracy triumphed, but India's Constitution has also triumphed. Our constitutional institutions have triumphed; our democratic processes have triumphed," he said.

The electoral battle was largely been framed as a direct contest between the All India Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee led the TMC campaign, focusing on governance, welfare delivery and regional identity, while also raising concerns over the electoral roll revision. The BJP, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, countered with an aggressive campaign centred on corruption, law and order, and anti-incumbency.

Counting is being conducted under tight security at multiple centres, with central forces, CCTV monitoring and election officials overseeing the process to ensure transparency. While polling was held for 294 seats, results are being declared for 293 constituencies, with repolling scheduled in Falta later this month. The Election Commission has maintained that all procedures are being followed strictly, even as political parties continue to raise concerns and counter-allegations.

At the constituency level, several high-profile contests are producing dramatic swings. In Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee, who initially trailed, has taken a strong lead over BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by over 8,000 votes after early rounds, signalling a key turnaround in one of the most closely watched seats.

The election also recorded a historic voter turnout of over 92 per cent, the highest since Independence, reflecting strong public participation. However, the results are being analysed in the context of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which saw nearly 90 lakh names removed, making it a significant factor in assessing voting patterns.

Beyond the BJP and TMC, parties like the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress are looking to regain political relevance after a diminished presence in previous elections. Their performance in this election could indicate whether they are able to re-emerge in Bengal’s evolving political landscape.

With trends fluctuating and key seats witnessing tight contests, the final verdict is expected to have far-reaching implications not only for West Bengal but also for national politics. Whether the TMC retains its hold, the BJP establishes a new foothold, or other players make a comeback, the results will shape the state’s governance and political narrative for years to come.
