West Bengal Election Results 2026 Highlights: ‘BJP’s Poriborton has arrived with a bulldozer’ - TMC alleges office vandalised near New Market

West Bengal Election Result 2026 Live Updates: West Bengal has entered verdict day, with counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections now underway across 293 constituencies, bringing to a close a prolonged and intense campaign. The focus remains on whether the All India Trinamool Congress can retain power or if the Bharatiya Janata Party can make a significant breakthrough in the state.

Tight security at counting centres

Counting is being conducted at 77 centres under a multi-layered security grid, with central forces, CCTV surveillance and a large number of observers deployed to ensure a smooth and transparent process. The Election Commission has reiterated that strongrooms housing EVMs remain under strict, round-the-clock security, dismissing allegations of tampering raised in the run-up to counting.

Record turnout amid SIR concerns

The elections, held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, recorded a voter turnout of 92.47 per cent, the highest in the state since Independence. Repolling in select booths also saw strong participation. However, the turnout has been viewed in the context of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which led to the removal of nearly 90 lakh names, making its impact a key factor in the final outcome.

High-decibel campaign by key players

The campaign saw top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, leading an aggressive push against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party, focusing on issues such as corruption, governance and law and order. TMC, in response, centred its campaign on welfare delivery, regional identity and criticism of the SIR exercise.

Opposition looks to regain ground

Apart from the two main contenders, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress are also looking to regain ground after their limited presence in the previous election.

Results for 293 seats today

Results are being declared for 293 seats, as polling in the Falta constituency was countermanded and will be held later this month. With high voter participation and a charged political backdrop, the outcome is expected to significantly shape the state’s political trajectory.

West Bengal Election Result: 'It was about to happen' - Humayun Kabir congratulates people of West Bengal for defeating TMC
Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AUJP) founder Humayun Kabir on Monday congratulated people of West Bengal for rejecting Trinamool Congress in assembly elections, accusing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of "looting" the state.

Speaking to reporters, Humayun Kabir said, "What can I say? What has happened is good. This was bound to happen. Mamata Banerjee became the CM thrice. She gave so much authority to her nephew. They cheated the people and looted their money. In 15 years, they surpassed the loot which was done by the British looted in 100-200 years. I would like to congratulate the people of Bengal who gave such a reply to TMC, who looted the state"

Humayun Kabir, who was expelled from TMC over the Babri Masjid construction controversy in Murshidabad, is now leading in both seats- Reijinagar and Nowda, according to the Election Commission of India.

In Reijinagar, TMC's candidate Ataur Rahaman has slipped to the third position after the third round of counting, while BJP's Bapan Ghosh is in the second position with a 6325-vote deficit.

In Nowda, TMC has also suffered the safe fate, with its candidate Sahina Momtaz Khan in third place, behind Humayun Kabir, who is in first place after seven rounds of counting

Expressing confidence in his victory, Kabir said, "I will win both seats and take the certificate home at 3 pm."

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has crossed the majority mark in the breathtaking West Bengal Elections, derailing Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's ambition of a consecutive fourth term.

According to ECI trends till 1:15 pm, the BJP is leading on 187 seats, while the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is leading on 92 seats.

West Bengal Election Result: ‘Ram Rajya’ will be established in Bengal, says Sukanta Majumdar as BJP leads in early trends
As early trends in the West Bengal Assembly elections show the BJP taking the lead, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Monday said the initial results indicate a major political shift in the state and said that 'Ram Raj' is going to be established.

Speaking to reporters, Majumdar said, “This is just the beginning. Only two or three rounds have been completed, and postal ballots have also been counted. However, the early trends clearly suggest that a BJP government is likely to be formed. ‘Ram Raj’ is going to be established in West Bengal.”

BJP leader and Kharagpur Sadar candidate Dilip Ghosh said that all necessary arrangements for counting have been made.
“Preparations are complete—from the government’s side, the Election Commission, and our party as well. The way people have voted indicates that change is certain,” he said.

Ghosh added that heavy security deployment is in place to ensure smooth counting.

“Only police and security forces are visible, as there are concerns that some may try to create disturbances during counting. However, proper arrangements have been made to ensure a peaceful process,” he said, expressing confidence that the results will become clearer by the afternoon.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is ahead in the high-profile Bhabanipur constituency in south Kolkata in early trends of West Bengal Assembly elections where he is contesting against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

After two rounds of counting, Adhikari is leading by a margin of 1,558 votes. It may be noted that Adhikari is also leading in Nandigram Assembly constituency by a margin of 7,698 votes in East Midnapore district.

Speaking to media persons following the early trends, Adhikari said, "BJP is forming the government. Initial trends show BJP is ahead in 135 plus seats and Trinamool Congress ahead in over 100 seats. It will be a neck-to-neck fight in Bhabanipur. I salute my Hindu voters for giving me a lead. There is anti-incumbency, plus Hindus are consolidated in favour of the BJP. This is a very good signal for us."

In 2021, Adhikari had defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram by a slim margin of 1,956 votes.

After the first hour of counting of votes for the two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal on Monday, the trend was showing a neck-and-neck battle between the ruling party and the Opposition BJP, with the BJP slightly ahead of the Trinamool Congress.

After the first three hours of counting, the tally for the BJP’s initial lead was 127, followed by the Trinamool Congress’ 87.

Congress candidates are yet to take a lead in any seat, while the CPI(M)-led Left Front candidates were leading in one seat. Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chairman Humayun Kabir is leading from Rejinagar in Murshidabad district.

There will be a minimum of ten rounds and a maximum of 26 in terms of counting rounds based on the constituency-wise number of voters.

West Bengal Election Result: People decided to vote for change, defeat fear - BJP on leading Bengal trends
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday said that trends released by the Election Commission of India in West Bengal indicate a strong wave in its favour, asserting that the people of the state are making their voice heard by "defeating fear".

The remarks came as the BJP was leading in 185 Assembly seats across the state, while the Trinamool Congress was ahead in 91 seats, according to ECI trends available at around 1 p.m., pointing to a significant gap between the two parties.

Reacting to the early trends, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said that both exit polls and counting trends were indicating a similar outcome.

"The signals given by the exit polls and the trends that are coming are pointing in the same direction -- that there is a wave of nationalism in Bengal. The trends will soon turn into results, and the wave will take the form of a tsunami," he told IANS.

He further said, "The conduct of these polls in a peaceful, fair and free manner, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, HM Amit Shah, Suvendu Adhikari and Samik Bhattacharya, and all others, is a sign of revolution."

BJP national spokesperson Rohan Gupta also expressed confidence that the trends would solidify further in the party's favour.

"The trends will be consolidated in favour of the BJP, and this is not a wave but a tsunami. This is the voice of the people of West Bengal. As Prime Minister Modi said, the people of West Bengal are fighting a battle for freedom. Today, together with the BJP, the voice of the people of West Bengal has won," he said.

"I believe this is the people's victory. I would especially like to thank the people of West Bengal for achieving this victory by defeating fear. People were suppressed by fear, and this time they voted for the change; they had had enough. The BJP will fulfil all aspirations of the people of the state," he added.

Another party spokesperson, Rajiv Jaitley, said the trends signal a major political shift in the state.

"The vanvaas of the people of Bengal is finally coming to an end. The people never wanted the Trinamool Congress to win; they knew that if TMC won, they would not let people live in Bengal. The BJP, on its own strength, is leading in Bengal now," he told IANS.

This is the BJP's plan, I have been saying this since yesterday that they will be shown ahead first. They have stopped counting at many places. Such machines have been found in Kalyani, where there is no match; atrocities are being committed against TMC from all sides through central forces. Through SIR, they tried to steal votes, and even now, we are ahead by more than 100 seats, which is not being reported. Everything is being reported wrong. The Election Commission is working entirely as per its own will, and central forces are also with them. The police are also working with the central forces. West Bengal Election Results 2026: Majority in sight for BJP in West Bengal, breaches Trinamool bastion
Bharatiya Janata Party has edged one step closer to breaching the Trinamool Congress' fortress in West Bengal and forming a government for the first time.

According to the Election Commission, the BJP is leading on 121 seats, while Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is leading on 71 seats, and its ally BGPM is leading on one seat, as per trends.

News channels have projected a narrow lead for the BJP in the 294-member assembly, projecting leads of 160 seats for the BJP, crossing the halfway mark of 148. TMC is leading on 121 seats.

Meanwhile, West Bengal LoP and BJP candidate from Nandigram and Bhabanipur, Suvendu Adhikari, expressed confidence in his party's performance as counting for the Assembly elections is underway.

Speaking to the reporters, Adhikari said, "BJP is forming the Government. Initial trends show BJP as 135 plus and approx 100 to TMC. Initially, it will be a neck-to-neck fight in Bhabanipur. In the first round of counting, out of the 14 booths, 6 are Muslim-majority. They used to get 90-95% of those votes last time, but it didn't happen this time; there is a crack. I am leading the 8 Hindu booths. From round 9-10 in Bhabanipur, I will be leading."

"There is anti-incumbency, plus Hindus are consolidated in favour of the Lotus. This is a very good signal for us...There has also been a Muslim vote bifurcation, especially in Malda, Mushidabad and Uttar Dinajpur," he further said.

West Bengal recorded the highest-ever voter turnout since independence with an impressive 91.66% polling in Phase-II of the Assembly elections. In the phase-I the poll-participation was 93.19%, taking the combined poll percentage to 92.47%.

In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee secured a decisive mandate, winning 213 out of 294 seats with a vote share of around 48 per cent, while the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the principal opposition with 77 seats and roughly 38 per cent votes, marking a sharp rise from its previous tally. The Left-Congress alliance failed to win any seats.

West Bengal Election Results 2026: Entire Bengal praying for Didi, we have full faith, says Trinamool's Kunal Ghosh
Kunal Ghosh, Trinamool Congress candidate from the Beleghata Assembly constituency, on Monday said that he has "full faith" in the people of Bengal, claiming that the public is praying for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's win and showering their blessings on the party.

In the Beleghata Assembly constituency, Gosh is currently leading with over 3,500 votes. He holds a margin of over 400 over the BJP candidate Partha Chaudhury, the Election Commission of India (ECI) trends showed as of 10:30 a.m.

When asked about the early trends, Ghosh told IANS, "We are not even looking at the early trends because we have confidence in the people of Beleghata, citizens of Bengal, workers and colleagues. In entire Bengal, people are praying for Mamata Didi and showering their blessings; we have faith in them."

Ghosh further slammed the ECI over alleged "harassment" of the Trinamool Congress leaders and workers, stating that he does not trust the poll body.

"I don't have trust in the Election Commission of India. Yesterday till late at night, they had harassed us. Sometimes, the CCTV are being closed, sometimes they are saying mobiles won't be allowed and not even pens. So, what will the counting agent do? How will he note down the votes? They are creating such problems to divert us, but we are Mamata Banerjee's soldiers, and we won't be defeated," the Trinamool leader said.

The counting of votes cast in the two-phase Assembly polls in West Bengal began at 8 a.m. on Monday, with postal ballots counted first.

On Monday, the counting is on for only 293 of 294 Assembly constituencies in the state, since the ECI, on Saturday, announced repolling for the entire Falta Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district on May 21, the results for which will be declared on May 24.

This time, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has brought about some changes in the counting pattern. In previous elections, counting of votes started only after the counting of postal ballots was completed fully.

However, this time, counting of only postal ballots will be done for the first 30 minutes, that is, from 8 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. From 8.30 a.m. onwards, the postal ballots and the EVM votes will be counted simultaneously.

"The counting of the postal ballots only for the first 30 minutes is to ensure that the counting of the postal ballots is completed before the completion of the counting of EVM votes. In case, in any counting room, if the counting of postal ballots is not completed before the last two rounds of counting, the counting of EVM votes will be kept on hold for some time, and only postal ballots will be counted during that period. The EVM vote counting will resume after the counting of postal ballots is completed," said an insider from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).

He also said that by following this new process, a clear trend in the results will be available by noon.

The contest in West Bengal is mainly between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the principal opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the last elections in 2021, Trinamool Congress ended tally with 216 seats, followed by the BJP at 77 and All India Secular Front (AISF) at one.

Neither Congress nor the CPI(M)-led Left Front, despite contesting the polls in an alliance, could win from a single constituency. This time, the main challenge for both Congress and Left Front is to open their accounts again in terms of presence in the state Assembly. This time, Left Front and Congress have contested independently, although Left Front had a seat-sharing arrangement with AISF.

The two-phase Assembly polls in West Bengal this time were conducted on April 23 and April 29, with a record turnout of nearly 93 per cent. Most of the exit poll predictions this time, barring two, have predicted the end of the 15-year Trinamool Congress regime and the beginning of the BJP rule in West Bengal.

West Bengal Election Results 2026: ‘Formation of BJP govt certain in Bengal': Leaders confident of historic win
As vote counting continues in West Bengal, BJP leaders have expressed strong confidence in forming the government, citing early trends that show the party ahead in several constituencies.

West Bengal BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya said, “Whatever ups and downs took place during the elections, let that be; now let people enjoy. The formation of the BJP government is certain.” His statement reflects growing optimism within the party camp as counting progresses.

BJP leader Shishir Bajoria also claimed that the trends indicate a historic outcome for the party. He said, “It is clearly visible today that everything will become clear in some time, and the BJP is going to create history here with a massive majority.”

BJP National Secretary Anil K. Antony highlighted that the party is witnessing positive momentum across states where counting is underway.

Speaking to IANS, Antony said, “These are initial trends, and the initial trends are very positive. We are very sure that as the day progresses further, our party is going to increase its mandate in each of these states, where the current trends are very positive. In West Bengal, the party is moving towards a decisive victory right now. We are leading in more than half the states. For the first time ever, we are going to see a double-engine government in West Bengal, something which is becoming normal these days...”

According to early trends as of 10 a.m., the BJP is leading in 48 seats in West Bengal, as counting continues.

The electoral contests across the state have drawn significant attention, with both the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition BJP closely tracking constituency-wise developments as results begin to take shape.

As counting progresses through the day, both parties remain on edge, with final outcomes expected to determine the political direction of West Bengal in the coming term.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the lotus is now blooming from Gangotri to Gangasagar following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s historic victory in West Bengal, and urged all parties to focus on change, not revenge, and prioritise the state’s future over fear.

Addressing party workers at the BJP headquarters after the Assembly poll wins in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry, Modi said it was a significant day that signals a bright future for the country.

"It is a day of trust in the great democracy of India, trust in the politics of performance, trust in the resolve of stability, trust in the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat.

"I bow before the people of West Bengal, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Keralam," he said at the victory celebration event, where BJP president Nitin Nabin, Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, among others, were present.

Modi recalled that on November 14 last year, after the Bihar election results, he had told party workers that the Ganga flows onward from Bihar to Ganga Sagar in West Bengal.

"And today, with victory in West Bengal, from Gangotri (Uttarakhand) to Ganga Sagar (West Bengal), it is nothing but the lotus in full bloom. Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal today, in these states surrounding Mother Ganga, there are BJP-NDA governments," he said.

Democracy, not fear, prevailed in what he described as a festival of democracy in West Bengal.

When the BJP has won in Bengal, there should be talk of 'badlav' (change) not 'badla' (revenge), 'bhavishya' (future) not 'bhay' (fear), he said.

The prime minister added that winning and losing are natural in politics, but the people of the five states have demonstrated why India is regarded as the mother of democracy.

"Democracy is not just a system for us; it is the river of traditions in our veins. Today, not only has India's democracy triumphed, but India's Constitution has also triumphed. Our constitutional institutions have triumphed; our democratic processes have triumphed," he said.

The electoral battle was largely been framed as a direct contest between the All India Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee led the TMC campaign, focusing on governance, welfare delivery and regional identity, while also raising concerns over the electoral roll revision. The BJP, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, countered with an aggressive campaign centred on corruption, law and order, and anti-incumbency.

Counting is being conducted under tight security at multiple centres, with central forces, CCTV monitoring and election officials overseeing the process to ensure transparency. While polling was held for 294 seats, results are being declared for 293 constituencies, with repolling scheduled in Falta later this month. The Election Commission has maintained that all procedures are being followed strictly, even as political parties continue to raise concerns and counter-allegations.

At the constituency level, several high-profile contests are producing dramatic swings. In Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee, who initially trailed, has taken a strong lead over BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by over 8,000 votes after early rounds, signalling a key turnaround in one of the most closely watched seats.

The election also recorded a historic voter turnout of over 92 per cent, the highest since Independence, reflecting strong public participation. However, the results are being analysed in the context of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which saw nearly 90 lakh names removed, making it a significant factor in assessing voting patterns.

Beyond the BJP and TMC, parties like the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress are looking to regain political relevance after a diminished presence in previous elections. Their performance in this election could indicate whether they are able to re-emerge in Bengal’s evolving political landscape.

With trends fluctuating and key seats witnessing tight contests, the final verdict is expected to have far-reaching implications not only for West Bengal but also for national politics. Whether the TMC retains its hold, the BJP establishes a new foothold, or other players make a comeback, the results will shape the state’s governance and political narrative for years to come.
