NEW DELHI: The hardline opposition leader and chief of Pakistan''s Jamiat-Ulema-Islam, Fazlur Rahman, said on Friday that their mission to India is for peace.
"Trust me, I am here for peace and brotherhood," said an emotional Fazlur Rahman, a hardline opposition leader and chief of Pakistan''s Jamiat-Ulema-Islam during his speech at a reception hosted in his honour by Jamiat-Ulema-Hind
"Though people here have welcomed us with great respect and honour, I have seen that media in general has been suspicious of our activities," said Rahman.
Rahman said he had seen some reports where the newspapers had questioned whether religious clerics could talk of peace.
"Why can''t religious leaders play an important role in building peace and brotherhood? Which religion prohibits them?" he asked.
"I have not made any U-turn with my statements. My organisation has and will be always in favour of democracy," the Jamiat leader said.
