Bolivia at 'breaking point', president warns protesters
Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz on Wednesday warned that the country was approaching a “breaking point” amid nearly a month of protests that have triggered shortages of food, fuel and essential medicines.
The US-backed leader, who took office six months ago during Bolivia’s worst economic crisis in four decades, is facing growing unrest over his centre-right policies. The capital La Paz has been heavily disrupted by demonstrations led by low-income workers and members of the country’s Indigenous majority, many demanding his resignation.
“The country needs order, and is reaching breaking point,” the 58-year-old president said at a public event in La Paz, while renewing his call for dialogue.

At least five people were killed and three others injured when unidentified armed men opened fire on locals in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, police said. The attackers had reportedly set up a checkpoint in the Shahrag area of Harnai district and were verifying identity cards when a dispute broke out, leading to the shooting. Four victims died on the spot, while another succumbed while being shifted to Quetta for treatment. The injured are undergoing medical care.
Amazon greenlights AI-generated shows for children
Amazon MGM Studios announced Wednesday it has greenlit the first three children's shows that were created under a new initiative to use artificial intelligence (AI) in content development.
The GenAI Creators Fund pays filmmakers, digital creators and startups to use AI to develop their projects in a short time frame.
"Punky Duck" series director Jorge Gutierrez said he is used to spending two years making a pilot, but his new show was greenlit to run on Amazon after just two months.
"The best way I can describe it is, it's like you have sex and then someone hands you the baby," Gutierrez said at the annual AI on the Lot Conference, where the first images of the approved animated series were shown. "It's pretty crazy."
West Coast chemical emergencies raise questions about safety of massive industrial tanks
There were two major hazardous chemical emergencies on the West Coast. A large tank containing a corrosive chemical at a Longview, Washington, paper mill ruptured on Tuesday, killing two and possibly nine others. And late last week, about 50,000 people were evacuated in Southern California after a chemical tank overheated and threatened the area with a catastrophic explosion. Authorities mitigated that risk, and people have been able to return home.
The incidents have raised questions about who is responsible for regulating companies that handle dangerous materials. An Associated Press review has found that officials at the local, state and federal levels all play a part in keeping these facilities safe.
Trump administration tells prosecutors to stand down on Venezuela leader, AP sources say
The Trump administration has quietly instructed federal prosecutors in Miami to avoid pursuing criminal investigations into Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez, a longtime target of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, according to current and former U.S. law enforcement officials, in the latest sign of warming relations between the White House and the oil-rich nation.
It’s unclear whether prosecutors had implicated Rodríguez in any crimes or whether investigators were moving toward an indictment. A Justice Department spokesperson said in an email “there was never an investigation into her to shut down.”
