India registered the highest single-day jump of 86,432 new coronavirus cases taking the national caseload past 40-lakh mark on Saturday. Maharashtra alone accounted for over 20,000 new cases. With 1,089 more deaths, the cumulative toll reached 69,561. Stay with TOI for all updates.

A tweet put out by the IMF’s chief economist Gita Gopinath confirmed that the Indian economy saw the steepest contraction in the June quarter among G20 countries. “In #GreatLockdown Q2 2020 GDP growth at historical lows. Graph puts G20 growth numbers on a comparable scale, quarter-on-quarter non-annualized. Should expect rebounds in Q3 but 2020 overall will see major contractions. The three-day average of fresh cases reported by India on September 3 was 77,387, which was 92.3% of the peak of 83,883 cases, which was itself reported on September 3. In no other country among the top 20 was this even 80%. Of the 210 countries and territories for which the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) compiles daily Covid data, this ratio was the highest for India.

South Korean doctors expected to end strike amid Covid cases surge
South Korean doctors have agreed to end a two-week strike which has hindered efforts to curb a new wave of coronavirus infections, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on Friday, after overnight talks over the government's medical reform plans. Some 16,000 intern and resident doctors have been on strike since Aug. 21. Trainee doctors are the backbone of healthcare services in emergency rooms and intensive care units, and volunteer at temporary testing stations.
