The capacity of bats to tolerate viruses such as the novel coronavirus may stem from their ability to control inflammation, according to a review of studies which says understanding the immune system of the flying mammals can provide new drug targets for human therapies against Covid-19.

Mexican officials say the number of confirmed Covid-19 deaths has passed 35,000, making it the country with the fourth-highest total. A count by Johns Hopkins University has only the United States, Brazil and Britain with more confirmed deaths from the new coronavirus. Sunday's rise to 35,006 confirmed deaths moved Mexico, a country with 130 million inhabitants, past Italy.

The United States, the country hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, on Sunday recorded 59,747 new cases over the last 24-hour period, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University. The number of cases in the US has rocketed in recent weeks, hitting a record of 66,528 in 24 hours on Saturday. The country has now registered a total of 3,301,820 infections, the Baltimore-based university said in its latest data as of 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Monday). The death toll stood at 135,171 with 442 additional deaths counted.

"Today, 2,657 coronavirus cases were registered and the total number of cases stands at 100,166," the ministry said on Sunday. More than 700 people are in intensive care. Argentina's coronavirus death toll stands at 1,845.

The state’s active caseload breached the one-lakh mark, with 1,03,516 patients now under treatment. Overall cases for the state also crossed the 2.5 lakh mark to reach2,54,427. The state though reported a dip in Covid-19 deaths with 173 in the last 24 hours, lowest in the last one week during which it was reporting over 200 deaths daily. And the state’s case fatality rate, which hovered between 4.5% and 4.7% for most of last month, has declined to 4%.
