Japan ending state of emergency in 3 prefectures, reports AP
Japan is preparing to remove a coronavirus state of emergency later Thursday in Osaka and two neighboring prefectures in the west where the infection is deemed slowing, while keeping the measure in place in the Tokyo region and Hokkaido. Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, in his opening remark at a government task force meeting, asked experts to evaluate a government plan to lift the measure in Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo.

Global coronavirus cases surpass 5 million, infections rising in South America
Global coronavirus cases surpassed 5 million on Wednesday, with Latin America overtaking the United States and Europe in the past week to report the largest portion of new daily cases globally.It represents a new phase in the virus' spread, which initially peaked in China in February, before large-scale outbreaks followed in Europe and the United States.Latin America accounted for around a third of the 91,000 cases reported earlier this week. Europe and the United States each accounted for just over 20%.A large number of those new cases came from Brazil, which recently surpassed Germany, France and the United Kingdom to become the third-largest outbreak in the world, behind the United States and Russia.Cases in Brazil are now rising at a daily pace second only to the United States.

Deaths in 15 worst-hit nations 83 times more than in India
The 15 countries most impacted by Covid-19 have together reported 34 times more cases and 83 times more deaths than India, despite their cumulative population being almost equivalent to that of India, the health ministry said, underlining the fewer number of cases as well as fatalities as “relatively good news”. Around eight persons per lakh population in India are affected by Covid-19, as against a world average of 62 per lakh even as India recorded a second consecutive day of one lakh tests. New high of 5,376 cases in a day across country
India recorded its biggest single-day jump in Covid-19 cases so far, breaching the 5,000-mark for the third time, by reporting 5,376 fresh cases from across the country on Wednesday. In a worrying trend, four of the biggest single-day figures have been reported in the last five days alone, indicating an unusual spike in fresh cases as migrants return to their respective home states, many of them carrying the virus with them. In contrast, till last week, on an average, the single-day figures were peaking once in three days. However, the death toll at 135 on Wednesday was lower than 146 casualties recorded the previous day. The cumulative cases in the country have risen to 1,10,814 while the virus has claimed 3,435 lives so far. Read full story

Online booking for 200 special trains from 10am today, large chunk connecting UP & Bihar
From 10am on Thursday, the railways will start online booking of tickets for 200 trains (100 pairs) which will start running daily from June 1 from major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Patna, Jaipur, Varanasi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Secunderabad and Thiruvananthapuram. These trains will have a mix of both AC and non-AC coaches, barring the five Duronto Express trains which will have only non-AC coaches. While 34 trains will start daily from four stations of Delhi except Old Delhi, over a dozen will depart from Mumbai and 11 from Howrah and Sealdah. While a maximum of 24 pairs of these trains will start or terminate in Bihar, 16 pairs will originate or terminate in Uttar Pradesh. Read full story
