Coronavirus: UP's Ghaziabad once again a 'red' zone

For parents, one of the most reassuring aspects of the coronavirus has been that it largely spares children, only causing mild symptoms. But recent reports of a new life-threatening pediatric inflammatory syndrome are worrying many families. Children in Europe, Britain and now the United States are being hospitalized for this mysterious illness, which can harm kids’ hearts and other organs, often requiring intensive care. According to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, as of May 12, New York was investigating 102 cases of this syndrome and three deaths, and cases have been reported in 14 other states so far as well. Thankfully, this new syndrome is still quite rare and it is treatable, and most kids who develop it fully recover. Here’s what parents need to know and what they should do if they’re concerned about their children’s health.

Japan is preparing to remove a coronavirus state of emergency later Thursday in Osaka and two neighboring prefectures in the west where the infection is deemed slowing, while keeping the measure in place in the Tokyo region and Hokkaido. Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, in his opening remark at a government task force meeting, asked experts to evaluate a government plan to lift the measure in Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo.

Global coronavirus cases surpassed 5 million on Wednesday, with Latin America overtaking the United States and Europe in the past week to report the largest portion of new daily cases globally.It represents a new phase in the virus' spread, which initially peaked in China in February, before large-scale outbreaks followed in Europe and the United States.Latin America accounted for around a third of the 91,000 cases reported earlier this week. Europe and the United States each accounted for just over 20%.A large number of those new cases came from Brazil, which recently surpassed Germany, France and the United Kingdom to become the third-largest outbreak in the world, behind the United States and Russia.Cases in Brazil are now rising at a daily pace second only to the United States.

Five more COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Manipur on Wednesday, taking the total number of positive cases to 25, according to the state government. India's COVID-19 tally reached 1,06,750 on Wednesday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Both Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are seeing a surge in fresh Covid-19 cases fuelled by returnees to the states. With approximately 20 lakh migrant workers having returned to UP in one and half months, it is going through, what health officials called, a ‘fourth Covid surge’. They said that about 70% of the cases being reported in the state in the past two weeks involve migrants. Read full story

Covid-19 cases which are either pre-symptomatic or are with mild or moderate symptoms and do not have fever before discharge from hospital cannot spread the infection, the health ministry said, clarifying that there is evidence to support it. Read full story

The 15 countries most impacted by Covid-19 have together reported 34 times more cases and 83 times more deaths than India, despite their cumulative population being almost equivalent to that of India, the health ministry said, underlining the fewer number of cases as well as fatalities as “relatively good news”. Around eight persons per lakh population in India are affected by Covid-19, as against a world average of 62 per lakh even as India recorded a second consecutive day of one lakh tests. The death toll rose to 3,303 and the number of cases to 1,06,750, an increase of 140 deaths and a record jump of 5,611 cases in the last 24 hours. Read full story

India recorded its biggest single-day jump in Covid-19 cases so far, breaching the 5,000-mark for the third time, by reporting 5,376 fresh cases from across the country on Wednesday. In a worrying trend, four of the biggest single-day figures have been reported in the last five days alone, indicating an unusual spike in fresh cases as migrants return to their respective home states, many of them carrying the virus with them. In contrast, till last week, on an average, the single-day figures were peaking once in three days. However, the death toll at 135 on Wednesday was lower than 146 casualties recorded the previous day. From 10am on Thursday, the railways will start online booking of tickets for 200 trains (100 pairs) which will start running daily from June 1 from major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Patna, Jaipur, Varanasi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Secunderabad and Thiruvananthapuram. These trains will have a mix of both AC and non-AC coaches, barring the five Duronto Express trains which will have only non-AC coaches. While 34 trains will start daily from four stations of Delhi except Old Delhi, over a dozen will depart from Mumbai and 11 from Howrah and Sealdah. While a maximum of 24 pairs of these trains will start or terminate in Bihar, 16 pairs will originate or terminate in Uttar Pradesh. Read full story
