Coronavirus in India: West Bengal reports 14,281 new Covid-19 cases, highest one-day spike

People are dying across the world because they are not being vaccinated against Covid-19, they are not being tested and not being treated, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday. He said he was concerned about the growing caseload in India.

The US Embassy in New Delhi has cancelled all in-person visa and interview-waiver till May 9 due to the worsening pandemic situation. About 50 VFS Global centres across India have stopped accepting visa applications for some countries.

According to ANI, Chandra further added, "We're seeing patients with diarrhoea, abdominal pain, rashes, conjunctivitis, confusion state, brain fog, bluish discolouration of fingers and toes, bleeding through nose and throat apart from usual symptoms -- sore throat, body ache, fever, loss of smell and taste."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with leading oxygen manufacturers across India via a virtual video conference. Modi said that this time is not only to deal with challenges but also to provide solutions in a very short time. He stressed on the need to maintain good co-ordination between the government and oxygen producers. Modi also appreciated oxygen producers for increasing their production in last few weeks. He acknowledged the several steps taken to increase the production of liquid oxygen, and also thanked the industry for diverting industrial oxygen to meet the medical requirements in the country. He added that keeping in mind the requirements of states pertaining to oxygen, the government is working on the effective use of the Railways and the Air Force so that the tankers reach the production centre as soon as possible.

Brazil's Covid-19 vaccination program is being put at risk by people failing to show up for their second shot, with 1.5 million people missing appointments for the follow-up dose needed to maximize protection, according to the Health Ministry.
