US, China eye rebalancing economic ties during upcoming Trump-Xi talks

US President Donald Trump is set to embark on his three-day visit to China with the objective of rebalancing trade, safeguarding US economic strength and national security. Senior US officials said that topics expected between the two sides include continued work on a US-China Board of Trade and Board of Investment. The two countries will focus on identifying mutual areas of interest in trade.

The two sides will also discuss additional agreements on industry, spanning aerospace, agriculture and energy, and following this productive visit, Trump looks forward to hosting President Xi and Madam Peng for a reciprocal visit in Washington DC later this year, the official said.

Some of the highlights of Trump's visit to China include the arrival, which is scheduled for Wednesday, participation in a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday and a visit to the Temple of Heaven. The POTUS would also participate in a state banquet and on Friday in a bilateral working lunch with President Xi before leaving China.

"On Wednesday evening, President Trump will arrive in Beijing. On Thursday morning, he will participate in a welcome ceremony and a bilateral meeting with President Xi. That afternoon, he will tour the Temple of Heaven with President Xi. That evening, he will participate in a state banquet, and on Friday morning, President Trump will participate in a bilateral tea and working lunch with President Xi before departing from China", the officials said.

The officials said that the visit would spearhead in delivering outcomes for Americans and rebalancing the economic ties with China.

"The American people can expect the President to deliver more good deals on behalf of our country. These agreements will further rebalance trade with China while putting American workers, farmers and families first and safeguarding US economic strength and national security. Topics are expected to include continued work on the US-China Board of Trade and the US-China Board of Investment. The Board of Trade will allow the United States and China to manage trade between the government of the United States and the government of China across non-sensitive goods. The board of investment will provide a government-to-government forum for discussing investment-related issues," they said.

Speaking about the scale of the Board of Trade and how much trade is expected to be covered in it, a senior US official said, "You're looking at double-digit billions, is probably the best way to put it."

Highlighting how the Chinese economy is governed in a centralized way, the official said that the Americans have found, over the past year, that a helpful way forward is for us to identify areas of mutual interest in trade, such as agricultural purchases and the purchases of aircraft.

Speaking about the details of the engagements in China, the US official underlined how under Trump, the bilateral ties have refocused on rebuilding the safety, security and prosperity of Americans.

The much-anticipated visit of Trump is set to focus on the economic and security realities of today, which would see POTUS rebalance the relationship with China and prioritise "restoring" American economic independence.

Dozens of Nigerian fishermen feared dead after Chad army strikes jihadists

Dozens of Nigerian fishermen are feared dead after a Chadian army attack against jihadists on Lake Chad, a civilian militia member and a union official told AFP on Sunday.

The militia member said the number of dead was unknown, as the operation on the vast expanse of water and marshland between Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad was still ongoing.

But a Lake Chad fishermen's union official said: "Chadian fighter jets bombarded two islands. So far, 40 Nigerian fishermen have been missing and believed to have drowned from the strikes, according to fishermen who escaped."

The militia member said Chadian fighter jets had been bombing islands controlled by Boko Haram on the Nigerian side of the lake since Friday, following a recent attack on its troops.

He said there were "huge casualties" among the fishermen, who pay tax to Boko Haram to allow them to fish in the area.

The bombing was concentrated on the jihadist stronghold of Shuwa island, where Nigeria, Niger and Chad meet on the lake, he added.

"Many people were killed," said Adamu Haladu, a fisherman from Baga, in northeast Nigeria.

"Most of those killed in the airstrikes are from the town of Doron Baga on the Nigerian shores of the lake and from Taraba state.

"It is not a secret that Nigerian fishermen pay tax to Boko Haram to have access to the remote island with a huge fish reservoir. Boko Haram ferry them on their boats to those islands and bring them back with their catch."

- Recent attacks -

The Chadian army has not yet issued a statement.

But Chad declared three days of national mourning last week after a Boko Haram ambush Wednesday on an army patrol in Lake Chad's island area killed two generals.

Two days before that, a Boko Haram raid on a military base on the shores of Lake Chad killed at least 24 soldiers.

In October 2024, Chad's army was accused of having killed dozens of Nigerian fishermen in air strikes launched against Boko Haram on Tilma island on Lake Chad.

That was in reprisal for a jihadist attack that killed 40 Chadian soldiers, but witnesses said the air strikes had instead killed the fishermen.

Chad's military at the time denied it had targeted civilians.

The Lake Chad area serves as a base for both Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger in 2015 reactivated a multinational force set up in the mid-1990s to combat jihadist groups operating around the lake.

Niger left the regional force last year due to strained ties between the military government in Niamey and its neighbours

Netanyahu wants to wean Israel off US military support, he tells CBS

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hopes to wean Israel off U.S. military support within a decade as his country pushes to strengthen ties with Gulf states, he ‌said in an interview that aired on Sunday.

"I want to draw down to zero the American financial support, the financial component of the military cooperation that we have," Netanyahu told CBS News' "60 Minutes" program.

Israel receives about $3.8 ‌billion of U.S. military aid a year, he said. The U.S. has agreed to provide a total of $38 billion in military aid to Israel from 2018 to 2028.

But it is "absolutely" the right time to possibly reset the U.S.-Israeli financial relationship, Netanyahu said.

"I don't want to ‌wait for the next Congress," he told CBS. "I want to start now."

While Israel has long had bipartisan consensus within the U.S. Congress for military aid, support from lawmakers and the public has frayed since the outbreak of war in Gaza in October 2023.

Saudi oil giant Aramco sees 25% jump in Q1 profit after shifting exports from Strait of Hormuz

Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, said Sunday its first quarter profit jumped 25% as the Iran war disrupted oil supplies and raised prices.

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia-based Aramco said it successfully shifted some oil exports to a pipeline to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, which has been disrupted by the war.

On Sunday, the price of Brent crude, the international standard, rose 2.58% to to $103.91 per barrel. That’s below its heights above $119 during the war, but it’s still much more expensive than its roughly $70 level from late February before the fighting began.

Aramco President and CEO Amin Nasser said the company's East-West Pipeline, which runs across Saudi Arabia from its Eastern oil fields to the Red Sea, is now operating at its maximum capacity of 7 million barrels of oil per day. Nasser said the pipeline is “helping to mitigate the impact of a global energy shock and providing relief to customers.”

Still, that’s only a fraction of Aramco’s typical production. Aramco produced 11.1 million barrels of oil per day in the fourth quarter of 2025, for example.

Aramco reported a profit of $32.5 billion for the quarter ending March 31, up 25% from the same period a year ago. The state-owned company reported a 12% decline in annual profits in 2025.

Before the war, 20% of the world’s traded oil typically flowed through the strait every day, as well as large supplies of natural gas, fertilizer and other petroleum products. Iran effectively seized control of the critical waterway after the US and Israel attacked it on Feb. 28. A US naval blockade imposed last month also complicates its use.

“Recent events have clearly demonstrated the vital contribution of oil and gas to energy security and the global economy, and are a stark reminder that reliable energy supply is critical,” Nasser said in a statement. “Despite these headwinds, Aramco remains focused on its strategic priorities and is leveraging both its domestic infrastructure and its global network to navigate disruption.”
