Proxima Centauri

Proxima Centauri holds the distinction of being the nearest star to our solar system, situated just 4.24 light years away. It ranks as the third brightest star visible in our night sky. Proxima Centauri, a nearby red dwarf star, is a member of the Alpha Centauri group, which also includes Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B. Even with small telescopes, observers can witness two stars in orbit around each other.

Stars that are closest to our solar system

While our Sun serves as the central star for our solar system, there are numerous other stars within our cosmic neighborhood that may not be widely known. Despite being billions of light-years away, these stars are considered "neighboring" due to their relatively small distances when compared to the vast scale of the cosmos. Presented below is a list of some stars that are closest to our solar system, encompassing various types, including brown and sub-brown stars, all within a 20-light-year range from the Sun

3/6

Alpha Centauri

Alpha Centauri forms a triple star system approximately 4.37 light-years from Earth, making it the closest known star system. Consisting of Alpha Centauri A and B as a binary pair, and Proxima Centauri, this system intrigues scientists with the possibility of finding habitable exoplanets and the potential for interstellar travel to this nearby celestial system.

4/6

Barnard's star

Barnard's star, a red dwarf located in the Ophiuchus constellation, is approximately 5.96 light-years away from Earth. Noteworthy for its apparent motion in the sky, this star displays significant angular movement due to its high proper motion compared to other nearby stars. Despite its faint appearance, scientists remain optimistic about discovering new exoplanets and further exploring this intriguing celestial body.

5/6

Wolf 359

Wolf 359, a red dwarf star in the Leo constellation, is one of the closest stars to Earth at a distance of about 7.8 light-years. Similar to Barnard's star, it appears dim from our vantage point and is not visible to the naked eye. With a small mass of 0.09 solar masses, it lacks known planets but is a focal point in astronomical study due to its rapid movement through the galaxy.

6/6

Lalande 21185

Lalande 21185, a red dwarf star situated in the Ursa Major constellation, lies approximately 8.3 light-years away from Earth. This star, smaller and less luminous than our Sun, stands out as one of the closest known stars to our solar system. Visible to the naked eye, Lalande 21185 is notable for its proximity to the Milky Way. While no known planets currently orbit this star, ongoing observations continue to enhance our understanding of this celestial neighbour.
