5 animals that can grow back lost body parts

We usually think that losing a body part is a permanent thing. But in nature, some animals have a superpower we can only dream of: they can regrow lost parts of their bodies. From arms to tails, some creatures can literally heal themselves in ways humans cannot. Here are five fascinating examples.

Starfish

Starfish might look slow and simple, but they have an incredible trick. If they lose one of their arms, they can grow it back, and sometimes even an entire new starfish can grow from a single arm!

3/6

Axolotls

Axolotls, sometimes called “Mexican walking fish,” are famous for staying in their baby form their whole lives. But what really makes them amazing is their ability to regrow legs, tails, even parts of their heart and brain. Scientists study axolotls to learn how humans might someday repair damaged tissues.

4/6

Planarians

Planarians are tiny flatworms, but don’t let their size fool you. Cut one in half, and each half can grow into a whole new worm. They have a type of cell called stem cells that let them rebuild their entire body. If you think about it, these little worms are the real champions of body regeneration.

5/6

Salamanders

Salamanders are famous in the animal world for regrowing lost tails and limbs. If a predator bites off a tail, it won’t be the end; a new one grows back over time. Even more amazing, salamanders can sometimes regenerate parts of their heart, eyes, and spinal cord. Nature really gave them a second chance at life.

Hydras

Hydras are tiny freshwater animals, and they are basically immortals in the animal world. If you cut a hydra into pieces, each piece can grow into a full hydra. They don’t just regrow parts; they can keep regenerating efficiently.
