5 Things That Make Otters Amazing

Otters are becoming more and more popular around the world, not only because they look playful and cute but also because of their clever ways of living. These animals are equally at home in water and on land, which makes them unique. They have special habits that help them survive, stay warm, and take care of each other.

From holding hands while floating to using stones as tools, otters show a mix of intelligence and charm that people find fascinating. As interest in wildlife grows, it’s worth knowing what makes these creatures so special.

Holding hands to stay together

Sea otters often hold hands while floating so they don’t drift apart. Mothers also hold their babies’ hands to keep them safe. Sometimes, many otters link up to form a big group called a “raft.” This keeps them safe and connected. It also looks really cute, which is why pictures of otters holding hands often go viral.

3/6

Thick fur keeps them warm

Unlike seals or whales, otters don’t have a thick fat layer. Instead, they rely on their extra-thick fur– the thickest in the world, with nearly a million hairs packed into one square inch. To stay warm, they spend a lot of time cleaning and fluffing it. If they don’t, cold water can get in and make them weak. For otters, grooming is just as important as eating.

4/6

They eat a lot

Otters burn energy very quickly, so they need plenty of food every day. In fact, they can eat up to one-fourth of their body weight daily, like a person eating several full meals a day. Depending on where they live, they eat fish, crabs, clams, and even small animals. This constant eating helps them stay active and playful.

5/6

They use tools

Otters are among the few animals that use tools. They often use stones to crack open clams and crabs. Some otters even carry their favourite stone everywhere. This shows how smart they are, since not many animals in the wild know how to use tools. Watching them crack shells can look almost human.

6/6

Pockets to carry food

Otters have loose skin under their arms that works like little pockets. They use these to hold food or carry stones while swimming. This helps them store snacks for later or keep a tool ready– almost like having a built-in bag. These “pouches” give them an extra advantage while hunting.
