6 colour-changing animals that will leave you amazed

Some animals in nature can do something really amazing– they can change their colours. It’s not just to look pretty, but also about staying safe, catching food, or showing how they feel. This special ability helps them adjust to what’s happening around them.

From sea creatures that disappear into the ocean floor to insects that shine like gold, here are six animals that can change their colours in surprising ways.

Chameleon

Chameleons are famous for changing their colours. These lizards can change their skin to match where they are or to show how they feel. Sometimes, they do it when they’re scared, angry, or when the weather changes. The reason they can do this is because of special cells under their skin that reflect light in different ways. Chameleons also have amazing eyesight– they can see all around them without moving their heads. Even though they don’t hear like us, they can still sense movements and vibrations nearby.

3/7

Mimic Octopus

The mimic octopus is one of the smartest sea creatures. It doesn’t just change colour– it can also copy the look and moves of other sea animals like jellyfish, lionfish, stingrays, and even sea snakes. Its skin reacts quickly to what’s happening around it. By changing both its shape and colour, it can hide from danger or sneak up on food. This quick change helps it survive in the ocean.

4/7

Seahorse

Seahorses, like the thorny seahorse, can also change their colour. They do this to blend in with their surroundings, stay safe from predators, or talk to other seahorses. Tiny colour cells in their skin, called chromatophores, make this happen. These cells respond to signals from their brain. When a seahorse feels scared, the colour change is fast, but during calm times, like when they’re trying to impress a mate, the change is slow and gentle.

5/7

Flounder

Flounders are flat fish that lie at the bottom of the sea. They are usually brown, but they can change their colour and pattern to match where they are. Their eyes help them do this.
When a flounder moves to a new spot, its eyes notice the colour of the surface, and its skin changes to match it. If their eyes are damaged, they can’t change colour properly. The peacock flounder is one of the best at this trick.

6/7

Squid

Squids are full of surprises– they have three hearts, blue blood, and can change colour in seconds. Their skin has special cells called chromatophores that help them do this. They use colour change to hide from enemies or sneak up on prey. This ability keeps them safe and helps them hunt in the deep sea.

7/7

Golden Tortoise Beetle

The golden tortoise beetle is a tiny insect with a shiny golden body. But when it’s touched or disturbed, its colour suddenly changes to red. This happens because of how light passes through its clear shell. It can also change colour during mating. Beetles like Charidotella sexpunctata and Charidotella egregia are known for this quick and beautiful transformation.
