Snakes with the most hypnotising eyes

Snakes often get a bad reputation for being scary as hell, but some of them are actually pretty amazing, especially their eyes. Some have huge, bright eyes. Some even have pupils that look like a cat’s. And these eyes aren’t just for show; they help snakes hunt, move safely, and keep track of what’s happening around them.

Here are a few snakes from around the world that really stand out.

The green tree snake that sees it all

The large-eyed green tree snake, also called the splendid dagger-tooth tree snake, lives in Africa. Most of the time, it’s bright green, but sometimes it can be black or blue. Its belly and neck are pale golden. Those big eyes help it move easily through trees and find its next meal. It’s venomous, so it’s best to admire it from a distance.

3/6

The cat-eyed viper

The rough-scaled bush viper is from Central Africa. Its scales are rough and bristly, and it has a wide, triangular head. Its eyes are vertical, just like a cat’s, and tiny scales surround them. When it feels threatened, it can lift the front part of its body. Its venom can affect the nervous system and sometimes cause bleeding, but it doesn’t always affect humans the same way.

4/6

The fast-moving whip snake

Southeast Asia is home to the green whip snake, also called the western whip snake. You can find it in Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Most of the time it’s bright green, though some are brown. Its big eyes help it move fast through forests and along streams. It’s mildly venomous but usually calm. When scared, it stretches its body and shows faint pale bands.

5/6

The small snake with big eyes

The banded cat-eyed snake lives in forests, swamps, and marshes in the Americas. It’s small and mildly venomous, but its big green eyes with vertical pupils really stand out. They look just like a cat’s! It mostly hunts at night, feeding on frogs and small lizards. Its venom is weak and usually just causes mild swelling or irritation in humans.

6/6

The downward-looking tree snake

The blunt-headed tree snake is found in Mexico, Central America, and South America. Its long, thin body and big head make it look unique. Its eyes face downward, which helps it hunt eggs, frogs, and small reptiles at night. It’s mildly venomous but not dangerous to humans. It likes wet, cool forests and low plants like coffee trees and bromeliads.
