New Bengali film to be made inspired by RG Kar Case

A new Bengali film titled Abhaya Shakti has been announced. The story is based on the brutal assault and death of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, 2024, which sparked widespread outrage across West Bengal and beyond. The protests that followed crossed national borders, drawing international attention.

However, the makers have not yet disclosed the cast. According to the director, the film is expected to feature actors from Bengal as well as artistes from outside the state.

Addressing the timing of the film’s announcement, the director reportedly said that several new details related to the case are now emerging, which he claims had remained suppressed earlier. He stated that the film would attempt to present those aspects as well. According to him, shoot for Abhaya Shakti is scheduled to begin in August, the same month in which the incident occurred. Responding to questions on why the film was announced after the change in government, Panda said he had long intended to make a film on the incident but had been unable to do so earlier due to time constraints.

Meanwhile, the makers also said the change in the state government gave them the confidence to back the project. The film’s announcement has triggered fresh discussion, given the continued public and political attention surrounding the case.
