Anniyan

Over the past decade or so, Tamil cinema has evolved in many ways. Kollywood actors and directors have broken age-old barriers and explored new concepts in storytelling, which has, in turn, led to humongous growth in Tamil cinema. One such movie was the 2007 comic caper ‘Chennai 600028’ which now has a sequel gearing up for its release almost nine years later. While fans of this film will enjoy the sequel, there are other films with brilliant stories, whose sequels haven’t transpired yet. We have drawn up a list of such movies and why they deserve a sequel.

Anniyan

The Vikram starrer 'Anniyan' introduced the concept of multiple personality disorder to the Tamil audience, with its lead actor playing a man suffering from this ailment. One of these personalities, which was called Anniyan, had the star playing a cold-blooded serial killer who punished wrongdoers. The climax shows the lead going through treatment and thus presumably cured. However, the cliffhanger end which shows the Anniyan personality re-surfacing as Vikram pushes a man off a moving train with an evil smile on his face set an excellent premise for a sequel. However, the makers are yet to take this forward.

Pudhupettai

‘Pudhupettai’ was the pinnacle of excellence for actors Selvaraghavan and Dhanush. The movie follows a dark, twisted journey of Dhanush, who transforms from an innocent school boy into a ruthless gangster. Later, when he achieves fame and power, his actions ensure his own downfall which in turn spirals into some unruly psychotic behaviour. The film ended with Dhanush becoming a slave to the corrupt political system as he loses all semblances of humanity and concern that he had for his friends or family. Needless to say, the sequels would be a spectacle to watch. Fans can only hope that this sequel will materialise soon.

Again, this Selvaraghavan film has the perfect plot for a sequel. The dark, fantasy adventure film ended rather abruptly when the lead Karthi carries the last surviving Chola prince into the forest, as the entire Chola clan is killed and tortured by soldiers a few feet away. Of course, the fate of the two survivors is still unknown and it would serve as a perfect plot for a part two. As for the movie itself, it combined mythology; history and fantasy in such an amazing way that fans are still in awe of this film and have been consistent in their demand for the sequel.

Thuppakki

Thuppaki

Slick, witty and action packed, ‘Thupakki’ was an action lover’s dream come true. Not only did it revamp the image of Vijay as an actor, but it also covered an important problem plaguing the country- terrorism. In ‘Thupakki’, an army man and special agent Jagdish played by Vijay takes down an entire sleeper cell chain while on a holiday and then returns back to the army. Of course, there are always more terrorists to kill and evil plans to be foiled, hence, it comes as no surprise that Ilayathalapathy fans are eagerly awaiting Jagdish's return to the frontline in this action sequel.

This Vijay Sethupathi film is one of the best black comedies out there. By the end of the movie, the message is loud and clear that there is no highway to success and that rules have to be bent sometimes to get ahead in life. In this comedy flick, Vijay plays a professional kidnapper who hires a bunch of unemployed youngsters into his operation. However, one kidnapping goes awfully wrong and lands them all in big trouble. Even though they manage to squeeze their way out of it thanks to sheer dumb luck, the movie ends with Vijay kidnapping the daughter of a prominent politician and landing in hot water once again. Needless to say, there is a perfect plot for a sequel right there.
