​‘Padayappa’ to ‘Visaranai’: Five Tamil best films to watch while you are in self-quarantine

With every one locked inside their homes, people have been finding newer ways to entertain themselves and keeping themselves engaged. While some are exploring their artistic side, some are sitting back and enjoying some good movies and series on the internet and OTT platforms. ​'Padayappa' - 1999

Superstar Rajinikanth-starrer 'Padayappa' was a motivational film for every hardworking youngster. In the film, Padayappa's family is humiliated by an uncle and forced to leave their home. After working hard, Padayappa regains the respect of his family, but the old enmity and a jealous woman continue to stir up trouble. 'Padayappa', which was written and directed by KS Ravikumar, featured Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Ramya Krishnan and Soundarya in lead roles. The music of the film was scored by AR Rahman, and the film won five Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.

​'Anbe Shivam' - 2003

Kamal Haasan's 'Anbe Shivam', which was directed by Sundar C, is one of the best Tamil movies. The story of the film is about Anbarasu (Madhavan) a successful ad maker, going places for his work. He is on a business trip to Bhubaneswar when he gets stranded on an airport during his return because flights are canceled due to heavy rains and floods. There, he meets fellow traveler Nalla Sivasi (Kamal Haasan) who befriends him. They bond together and Anbarasu finds a big brother in him.

​'Winner' - 2003

'Winner' is about a young man who goes to his hometown and falls in love with the daughter of the village chief. A village leader learns of this and kidnaps the girl and then the young man tries to rescue her by risking the life of his parents. 'Winner' featured Prashanth and Kiran in lead roles with Vadivelu, Vijayakumar, MN Nambiar and Riyaz Khan in supporting roles. The film was especially known for the performance of Vadivelu in the film, and it was directed by Sundar C.

​'Ayan' - 2009

'Ayan' was an action thriller directed by KV Anand, and featuring Suriya, Prabhu, Tamannaah, Akashdeep Saighal, Jagan and Karunas in main roles. The story of 'Ayan' revolves around a young man Deva (Suriya), who works for the kidnapper Dass (Prabhu), who has been caring for him for years. However, when his best friend is killed, Deva decides to help the police to arrest the dangerous drug lord.

​'Visaranai' - 2015

‘Visaranai’, which was directed by Vetrimaaran, was based on the novel Lock Up written by M Chandrakumar, and it even won several awards. The film featured Dinesh, Anandhi, Samuthirakani, Aadukalam Murugadoss, Kishore, Pradheesh Raj and Silambarasan Rathnasamy in the main roles. 'Visaranai' was about a group of immigrants who are tortured to plead guilty to a crime they did not commit. When a policeman helps them escape from their home, they are unaware of the problem they are facing and agree to do him a favour. The political drama that follows is worth a watch.
