Tamil filmmakers have been doing wide research for their films to impress fans by bringing up a new concept or new story. But sometimes, filmmakers have opted to do films based on popular novels. The idea of bringing the stories of a novel has worked out well for the filmmakers as several films inspired by novels have transformed into super hits at the box office. 'Aalavandhan'

Kamal Haasan played the dual role in 'Aalavandhan', which also had a story and screenplay by the actor. 'Aalavandhan' was inspired by the novel 'Dhayam', which was also written by Kamal Haasan, while the talented actor took support from Suresh Krissna to direct the film. Despite mixed reviews, 'Aalavandhan' turned out to be a profitable venture, and the film's shorter version is gearing for a re-release soon.

'Asuran'

After the success of 'Vada Chennai', Vetri Maaran joined hands with actor Dhanush for 'Asuran', which was inspired by writer Poomani's novel 'Vekkai'. Dhanush stunned fans with his dual shade character, and his impressive performance bagged him the National Award for Best Actor. 'Asuran' also developed as Dhanush's first film to reach Rs 100 crore at the box office.

'Soorarai Pottru'

Suriya joined hands with director Sudha Kongara for 'Soorarai Pottru', the film is based on the life story of the Air Deccan founder GR Gopinath. Sudha Kongara expanded the film's story from "Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey", which was written by GR Gopinath. The emotional life story turned into a huge hit, and 'Soorarai Pottru' bagged five National Awards.

'Viduthalai'

Vetri Maaran, who mostly opts to film a story based on novels, has made his dream come true by making a film on the novel 'Thunaivan' written by Jeya Mohan. The filmmaker has made the film in two parts, and the first part was released in theatres last March. The expectations are now high for the sequel, and the film is set to open big.

Mani Ratnam made the dreams of millions turn true by making a film on late writer Kalki Krishnamoorthy's novel 'Ponniyin Selvan'. After several cinema stars failed to make a film on 'Ponniyin Selvan', Mani Ratnam achieved the dream with his continuous effort, and the historical drama was released in two parts. Both parts have become a huge hit at the box office, while the 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' is currently doing a rampage at the box office.
