These Mollywood celebs tried a hand at direction in 2020

The newbie directors

When a lot of projects got stalled in 2020 due to the pandemic restrictions, certain Mollywood celebs took it as an opportunity to try a hand at direction. From music videos and short films to feature films, these artistes explored the various aspects of direction in multiple mediums and entertained their fans, releasing their works on social media. Here are some of the Mollywood artistes who took their baby steps in direction, this year:

Remya Nambeesan's 'Unhide'

Early this year, Remya ventured into direction through a short film, titled ‘Unhide.’ The movie addressed problems that women face from a misogynistic society. It also stressed on the importance of taking consent when it comes to sexual intimacy. The film starred ‘Ordinary’ actress Shrita Sivadas and it also had voiceover in Tamil, by Remya herself. It was launched by Manju Warrier, Vijay Sethupathy and Tamil director Karthik Subbaraj.

Grace Antony's film 'Knowledge'

During the lockdown, with limited crew, Grace made a short film, titled ‘Knowledge.’ The film featured Niranjana Anoop, Ahina Andrews, Anahira Maria and the actress herself in its cast. It took up the subject of first menstruation experience in young girls, and how it turns into special memories for them, often. The project had music by Aby Tom Cyriac. Its first look poster was unveiled by Manju Warrier.

Kaniha's Mother's Day special film 'Maa'

Kaniha launched ‘Maa,’ the short film she directed, in the month of May. She revealed that its post-production work was done completely online. The film was released in connection with the occasion of Mother’s Day. The actress said its dedicated to all moms, who put their children’s wellbeing ahead of their own. She also said the film is a reminder to celebrate moms every day.

Ganapathy's short film 'Onnu Chirikku'

Young actor Ganapathy directed a much-appreciated short film, titled ‘Onnu Chirikku,’ a few months ago. The six-minute-long movie had an elderly farmer couple as the central characters, and was shot in some scenic locations in Kannur. Its story had the flood-ravaged State as the backdrop. Its refreshing, rustic feel was lauded by many. The film showed how one can smile even when your belly is empty.

Gopi Sundar directs a music video

Music director Gopi Sundar tried a hand at film direction through the music video Indhumathi. It was rendered by State Award winner singer – actress Sithara Krishnakumar. The song was composed by Gopi himself, alongside acting in the video. Interestingly, he directed the video to do something special for Onam. The artiste also said he wanted to make visuals of the video based on what he had in mind, and that’s why he ventured into direction.

Santhy Balachandran directs a two-minute film

Like Kaniha, Santhy Balachandran’s movie was also dedicated to her mom, on Mother’s Day. Though just two minutes long, it featured the daily activities of her mom. Santhy captioned the movie thus, ‘I tried my hand at writing, shooting and editing a film. It is far from perfect and my disinclination to tinker with it further made me hesitate to share it on a public platform. But then, my sweet and wise friends reminded me of something I often say: progress over perfection.’

Vinayakan to direct 'Party'

State Award winner actor Vinayakan announced this year that he will be debuting as a director, and announced his project, titled ‘Party.’ The film will also be written by him. Before direction, he has tried a hand at music direction. He had composed a song for his film Kammatipaadam, called ‘Puzhu pulikal,’ and had composed another in ‘Trance’ too. Details on who will be acting in the film and its genre are yet to be revealed.
