Actors often make headlines for their films and television appearances, but a few years ago, veteran actor
Rakesh Bedi found himself in the news for an entirely different reason. The actor, known for memorable performances in 'Dhurandhar', 'Chashme Buddoor', 'Hero No. 1', and 'Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain!', became the victim of a sophisticated banking fraud that left authorities puzzled. What made the case particularly alarming was that the money allegedly disappeared from his account without any OTP being shared with the fraudsters.
An unexpected call triggered alarm bells
As stated by Indian Express, the incident reportedly unfolded when Aradhana Bedi, the actor's wife, began receiving repeated calls from an unknown number. After ignoring several attempts, she eventually answered one of them. The caller claimed that a substantial amount had mistakenly been transferred from her bank account and insisted that an OTP had been sent to her phone. However, instead of cooperating, Aradhana sensed something suspicious and ended the conversation.
"I immediately disconnected the call suspecting something amiss." At that point, she believed she had avoided a possible scam. But what followed came as a complete shock.
Shortly after the call, Aradhana checked her banking details and discovered that Rs 4.98 lakh had already been withdrawn from the joint account she shared with Rakesh Bedi.
The most puzzling aspect of the case was that neither an OTP nor any confidential information had been disclosed to the caller. Investigators reportedly described the method as unusual because cybercriminals generally rely on obtaining sensitive details before carrying out such transactions. The unexpected withdrawal prompted the family to immediately approach the police.
The police investigation
Following the complaint, the Oshiwara police registered a case and began tracking the flow of money. Officials reportedly coordinated with the concerned bank to identify the recipient account and prevent further movement of funds. At the same time, cybercrime investigators started examining the transaction trail to understand how the fraud had been executed.
Not the only time he was targeted
Interestingly, this wasn't the first financial scam linked to the actor. Months earlier, Rakesh Bedi had reportedly been duped by a fraudster posing as an Army officer in connection with the sale of a property. The Rs 4.98 lakh case served as yet another reminder that cybercriminals continue to evolve their tactics, making even cautious account holders vulnerable to increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes.
