‘Pather Panchali’ (1955)

Ray's 'Pather Panchali' elicits the celebrated "Apu Trilogy" and its naturalistic style was a watershed moment for Indian cinema. It received the National Film Award for both Best Film and Best Feature Film in Bengali, as well as awards at Cannes.

2/5

‘Apur Sansar’ (1959)

The last segment of the "Apu Trilogy," 'Apur Sansar,' traces Apu's journey from adolescence to adulthood and through love and loss—it earned Ray the National Film Award for Best Film in part due to Ray's subtle storytelling and ability to reveal the emotions that every human experiences.

3/5

‘Charulata’ (1964)

Leaned from Rabindranath Tagore's novella, 'Charulata' remains one of Ray's greatest films. The film's exploration of loneliness and repressed longing in a woman's life was dazzling. It received the National Film Award for Best Film and, to this day, is still regarded as Ray’s personal favorite.

4/5

‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ (1968)

A delightful fantasy-musical about two totally unlikely heroes with magical gifts, 'Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne' showcased Ray's diversity, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and Best Director, and showed Ray could achieve beyond realism.

5/5

‘Seemabaddha’ (1971)

'Seemabaddha' was a stark critique of corporate desire and moral compromise, and it incorporated a changing socio-political context specific to India. It was awarded a National Film Award for Best Film; this recognition reflected Ray's ability to address contemporary issues in the film medium.
