A Visionary Filmmaker

Guru Dutt was born as Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone on 9 July 1925 in Bangalore. A gifted director, actor, and producer, he became one of Hindi cinema’s greatest auteurs. His films (Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam) were known for their lyrical storytelling and striking visual style. He combined artistic depth with popular appeal, earning him admiration that only grew after his death.

Rise to Fame

After working as a choreographer and assistant director, he made his directorial debut with Baazi (1951), which turned Dev Anand into a star. He followed it with hits like Aar Paar and Mr. & Mrs. '55. His films often explored themes of loneliness, disillusionment, and the artist’s struggle in a materialistic world.

Personal Turmoil

Guru Dutt’s personal life was marked by deep emotional turmoil. He married singer Geeta Dutt, but their relationship grew strained, partly due to his close association with Waheeda Rehman, whom he cast repeatedly and admired deeply. His marriage deteriorated amid rumours, misunderstandings, and his own bouts of depression and alcoholism.

Kaagaz Ke Phool and Artistic Despair

In 1959, he released Kaagaz Ke Phool, India’s first CinemaScope film. Though it is now regarded as a masterpiece, it was a commercial failure at the time. The film’s story—a director’s decline and loneliness—eerily mirrored his own life. The rejection hurt him deeply and contributed to his sense of professional despair.

A Life Cut Short

Guru Dutt struggled with depression and reportedly attempted suicide more than once. On 10 October 1964, he was found dead in his rented apartment in Mumbai at just 39 years old. Officially, the cause was a combination of alcohol and sleeping pills, though whether it was accidental or intentional remains unclear.
