Age-defying Bollywood pairings that took audiences by surprise

When ages and horizons were blurred and chemistry took control, these pairings amused and challenged the status quo. While some were eyebrow-raising, others felt sentimental. But they all had the bravado of celluloid desire, mentorship and longing. Here are the duos that bent artistic license and excited the popular imagination.

1. Amitabh Bachchan and Jiah Khan – Nishabd

In a controversial move, Amitabh Bachchan at age 64, was cast opposite 18-year-old Jiah Khan in what is a timeline shocking 36-year age gap that made viewers sit up and take notice. The emotional usually presented relationship that took place in 'Nishabd,' based on feelings of emotional intimacy and infatuated desire, had all the suspenseful tension of violation. The critics could dismiss the morality of this generation spanning relationship; however, it was a bold movie that explored yearning and vulnerability in generationally opposing age groups.

2. Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chhillar – Samrat Prithviraj

A 30-year age gap marked this historical romance, with Akshay Kumar, then in the age of 54, cast opposite debutante Manushi Chhillar, who was 24. The grandeur of their costumes masked a visual imbalance that many viewers could not ignore. The contrast underlined Bollywood's recurring preference for older male leads paired with far younger female actors, reigniting conversations around equitable casting.

3. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur – Tiku Weds Sheru

Although 49-year-old Nawazuddin Siddiqui was paired with Avneet Kaur, a 22-year-old actress, in reality, it was a combination of a 27-year-old age gap that attracted a tremendous amount of scrutiny from those covering the film and audiences at large. Although some elements of the film ventured towards its eccentricity and dark humor, the romantic relationships between characters of such opposing ages raised moral questions related to representation and industry standards.

4. Salman Khan and Saiee Manjrekar – Dabangg 3

Salman Khan, then 53, appeared opposite 21-year-old debutante Saiee Manjrekar, introducing a 32-year age gap. Though their storyline was restrained in romantic depth, the casting still spotlighted Bollywood’s systemic pattern of introducing very young actresses alongside ageing male superstars, often without storyline necessity.

5. Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu – Cheeni Kum

In this movie, the 30-year age gap between Amitabh Bachchan being, 65 and Tabu, 35 was framed with maturity and emotional intelligence. The film 'Cheeni Kum' offered a different point of view on age difference, and love through companionship and laughter across different generations. The chemistry between the two characters was different, conversational, and organic, making it for a delightful watch.
