Kaiju No. 8 anime's promo video teases theme songs, April 13 premiere
The anime adaptation of Naoya Matsumoto's manga "Kaiju No. 8" has unveiled its second main promotional video, setting the stage for its debut on April 13. The video not only showcases the series' premiere date but also introduces the opening theme, "Abyss," performed by British singer YUNGBLUD, and the closing theme, "Nobody," by the American pop-rock group OneRepublic.
Scheduled to air on TV Tokyo on April 13, the anime will be available for streaming on Crunchyroll with an English dub option. Furthermore, X/Twitter will simulcast the series worldwide in real-time, aligning with its Japanese TV broadcast.
The main cast includes Masaya Fukunishi as Kafka Hibino/Kaiju No. 8, Wataru Katō as Reno Ichikawa, Asami Seto as Mina Ashiro, Fairouz Ai as Kikoru Shinomiya, Kengo Kawanishi as Soshiro Hoshina, Yūki Shin as Iharu Furuhashi, Keisuke Kōmoto as Haruichi Izumo, and Shunsuke Takeuchi as Aoi Kaguragi.
Directed by Shigeyuki Miya (known for "Onihei"), the series features Ichiro Okouchi (famous for "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion") as the series composer and screenwriter. Tetsuya Nishio, the character designer and chief animation director behind "Naruto," lends his talent, while Mahiro Maeda, recognized for his work on "Shin Godzilla," designs the monsters. The art direction is managed by Shinji Kimura ("Tekkonkinkreet"), and the music is composed by Yuta Bando ("BELLE"). Animation production is led by Production I.G ("Ghost in the Shell"), with Studio Khara ("Rebuild of Evangelion") responsible for kaiju designs and artworks.
"Kaiju No. 8" originated from Matsumoto's manga, which premiered on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ website in July 2020. The series quickly gained popularity, with its first print volume released in December 2020 and subsequent printings due to high demand. Viz Media holds the license for the manga, releasing both digital and physical chapters. Shueisha publishes it on MANGA Plus under the title "Monster #8."
The manga reached a significant milestone in September 2021, surpassing 4 million copies in circulation, making it the fastest Shonen Jump+ manga to achieve this feat. It received nominations for the Manga Taisho Awards, Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and Eisner Awards. Additionally, it secured the top spot in the "Next Manga Awards" in the web manga category in August 2021. Kentarō Hidano is set to launch a spinoff manga on January 5.
