The 2019 film 'Joker' starring Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, was nominated for an astounding 11 Oscars in 2020, including Best Picture. The gritty take on the Batman villain's story won Joaquin the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading role. The film which was a fresh take on the Joker's origins story is currently the most-nominated superhero movie in Oscar history. The film also won the award for Best Original Score.

Black Panther

The Chadwick Boseman-led 'Black Panther' film received seven nominations at the Oscars and won three awards. The critically acclaimed film followed the story of T'Challa as he took over the throne of Wakanda. The movie won the Oscars in the Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design categories.

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse

'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' became the third animated superhero film to win an Academy Award in the Best Animated Feature film category. The movie, which first gave fans a look into the multiverse, followed the story of Miles Morales as he steps into his superhero suit and sets out on a journey to save the world with a help of other Spider-people from the 'Spider-Verse'. tells the interwoven stories of multiple Spider-people across different multi-verses.

There's something about DC's villains that help the studio bag Oscar nominations and wins. Suicide Squad ended up winning an Oscar for Best Hairstyling and Makeup. The film followed Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and her team of villains on their 'suicide' mission to save the world.

Big Hero 6

Based on Marvel comics, the emotional superhero film 'Big Hero 6' which doubled up as a coming-of-age story, won the award for Best Animated Feature Film. Though the film is not technically a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stan Lee still makes his iconic cameo in animated form.

The Dark Knight

The 2008 film 'The Dark Knight' received eight Oscar nominations at the Academy Awards and won for Best Sound Editing and Best Supporting Actor. The Christopher Nolan-directed film gave fans a more realistic approach to the much-loved hero and supervillain played by Heath Ledger. The movie, along with 'Iron Man' is believed to have pushed the boundaries for superhero movies at the award show.
