Thiruvananthapuram airport commissions advanced HRET-equipped crash fire tender
Thiruvananthapuram: In a major boost to aviation safety and emergency preparedness, Thiruvananthapuram airport has commissioned an advanced crash fire tender equipped with a High Reach Extendable Turret (HRET).
The state-of-the-art Rosenbauer Panther crash fire tender, procured at a cost of over Rs 12 crore, significantly enhances airport’s aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) capabilities. Airport authorities said the induction marks a key milestone in strengthening emergency response infrastructure and ensuring compliance with international aviation safety standards.
A standout feature of HRET system is its ability to penetrate an aircraft’s fuselage and deliver water, foam or other firefighting agents directly into passenger cabins or cargo compartments. This enables firefighters to suppress onboard fires more rapidly and effectively during emergencies.
The vehicle is also equipped with a thermal imaging camera capable of detecting hidden heat sources and fires inside enclosed spaces, including aircraft cabins and cargo holds. When fully extended, turret can reach a height of 16.5m and project water up to 85m in both jet and spray modes.
The crash fire tender can carry 11,300 litres of water, 1,300 litres of foam and 250kg of dry chemical powder. Powered by a 700-horsepower Volvo engine, it can accelerate to 80 kmph in under 30 seconds and reach a top speed of 120 kmph.
Officials said the new addition will further enhance safety for passengers, airline operators and airport personnel while improving airport’s ability to respond swiftly to aircraft emergencies.
