Police arrest 368 persons in statewide raids under Operation Toofan
Thiruvananthapuram: As part of Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt, a statewide special drive launched by state police to curb drug trafficking and abuse, 368 persons were arrested and large quantities of narcotic substances were seized during raids conducted across the state.
Police subjected suspected drug peddlers and individuals involved in narcotics distribution to extensive inspections and enforcement action. A total of 340 cases were registered for possession of various banned narcotic substances.
According to police, the raids resulted in the seizure of 0.549 kg of MDMA, 16.80 kg of cannabis, 0.461 kg of hashish oil and 220 cannabis bidis. Altogether, 368 individuals were arrested in connection with the cases.
Operation Toofan was launched statewide on June 2 with the objective of making the state drug-free and identifying and dismantling the networks responsible for the spread of narcotics. The initiative aims to strengthen legal action against drug mafias while building a people’s movement against drug abuse through public participation.
To prevent the distribution of narcotics, the police have deployed four special squads in each of the state’s 84 police subdivisions. The operation also includes efforts to curb interstate drug trafficking by conducting inspections at suspected drug-manufacturing units in other states and taking action against those involved in production, storage and distribution.
The operation’s jurisdiction extends to five states and two union territories, and state police plan to seek assistance from central agencies such as Enforcement Directorate, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
As part of the campaign, a comprehensive digital surveillance mechanism, including mobile applications and WhatsApp chatbots, is also being developed to enable citizens to anonymously share information regarding drug trafficking and illegal narcotics trade.
