Hazaribag: Two bike-borne youth were killed after a coal-laden truck hit them and dragged the vehicle for nearly 200 metres in Churchu area of Hazaribag district late on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Akash Hansda (28) and Rajendra Baske (24). Police said the accident occurred under the Churchu police station limits when the truck collided with the scooter. While Akash died on the spot, Rajendra succumbed during treatment at Hazaribag Sadar Hospital. The truck driver fled after the accident.
The incident sparked outrage, with villagers deflating the truck’s tyres and blocking the road with the bodies.
Police teams from Churchu, Ango, Charhi and Tatijharia stations rushed to the spot and tried to pacify them, who were demanding compensation and stringent action against those responsible.
Locals alleged that illegal coal transportation is rampant in Churchu and Ango claiming that the frequent movement of speeding heavy vehicles often leads to repeated accidents.
About the said truck, Churchu officer-in-charge Kumar Ashwini said, “The truck has been seized but no valid documents related to the coal were found in the vehicle. Further probe is on.”
Akash is survived by his wife and three young children, while Rajendra left behind his wife and a son. Villagers said both were sole earning members in their families.
