Painting worker dies after being run over by car

Pune: A 48-year-old painting worker died after a reversing car ran over him. The accident happened on Wednesday evening at Dattanagar in Ambegaon when the victim was sleeping behind the car. The driver did not notice him and reversed the vehicle, police said.

The Ambegaon police have identified the deceased as Shrikant Bhatade, a resident of Katraj. The police have arrested the car driver from Baramati on the charge of causing death by negligence. Bhatade’s wife lodged a complaint on Thursday.

An officer from the Ambegaon police said the accident occurred around 6.15pm on Wednesday in front of a furniture store at Ambegaon. Bhatade was sleeping behind the car, which was parked near the store. The driver did not notice that someone was behind the vehicle and reversed it.

“Bhatade sustained severe injuries after he came under the wheels of the car. The car owner and the driver took him to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” the officer said.
