Safety audit raises concerns over steep gradient

PCMC is preparing precautionary measures for the under-construction Rakshak Chowk flyover near Pimple Nilakh after a safety audit flagged concerns over its steep gradient, raising questions about motorist safety ahead of its opening. (Picture credit: Ashish Gupta)

Inspection triggers review of flyover design

The audit followed a site inspection by Maval MP Shrirang Barne, who flagged the sharp slope as a potential accident risk. He compared it with Nigdi’s Madhukar Pavale flyover, urging a rethink of the design and possible extension.

3/7

Speed limit and safety steps planned

Civic officials said proposed measures include enforcing a 30 kmph speed limit, adding rumble strips, and installing enhanced signage to alert commuters well in advance about the steep section of the flyover.

4/7

Two-wheeler restriction under consideration

Authorities are also evaluating whether to restrict two-wheelers on the flyover as part of precautionary steps. However, officials clarified that a final decision on this proposal is yet to be taken.

5/7

Key corridor expected to ease traffic

Located on the Aundh-BRTS road, the flyover connects key routes towards Pune, Ravet, and Mumbai highway. Once opened, it is expected to ease congestion and improve traffic flow despite ongoing safety concerns over its slope.

6/7

No major design flaw found in audit

Despite concerns, officials maintained that the audit did not find any structural issues. They said the gradient complies with Indian Road Congress norms and no major design changes have been recommended.

7/7

Project nearing completion stage

The Rs 22-crore Rakshak Chowk flyover project is over 95% complete and in its final phase. Officials said it was designed by experts from COEP and vetted as per mandated engineering standards.
