The constituencies going to polls include Bagalkot and Davanagere South in Karnataka, Baramati and Rahuri in Maharashtra, Koridang in Nagaland, Dharmanagar in Tripura, and Umreth in Gujarat.
Polling teams have already reached their respective booths with electronic voting machines (EVMs) and VVPAT systems, while mock polls will be conducted before voting begins to verify machine functionality. Security has been tightened across sensitive locations, with deployment of central forces, local police and micro-observers to monitor proceedings.
The Baramati bypoll in Maharashtra has drawn significant attention following the death of former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash earlier this year. His wife, Sunetra Pawar, is contesting the seat, with no major political party fielding a strong challenge against her, making the contest largely one-sided. Her victory is also crucial to meet constitutional requirements mandating her membership in the state legislature within six months of taking oath.
In Rahuri, the bypoll was necessitated after the death of BJP MLA Shivajirao Kardile, with his son Akshay Kardile contesting against candidates from NCP (SP) and other parties in a more direct contest.
Karnataka’s Bagalkot and Davanagere South seats are also being closely watched after the deaths of senior Congress MLAs HY Meti and Shamanur Shivashankarappa. The contests are seen as politically significant for both the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP.
In Gujarat’s Umreth, the bypoll follows the death of BJP MLA Govind Parmar, with a direct contest between BJP and Congress candidates. Tripura’s Dharmanagar and Nagaland’s Koridang seats also went to polls after the deaths of their respective sitting MLAs, with multi-cornered contests expected.
Meanwhile, the proposed bypoll in Goa’s Ponda constituency was declared “null and void” by the Bombay High Court, citing provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, as the remaining term of the assembly is less than a year.
Voting will continue through the day, with turnout figures expected in phases. The results will determine new representatives in these constituencies and are likely to offer key political signals ahead of future electoral contests.
