PMC plans to build electronic crematorium at Digha Ghat
Patna: In a move towards modernising urban infrastructure and promoting eco-friendly funeral practices, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) plans to construct an electric crematorium at Digha Ghat. The project, estimated at a cost of Rs 5 crore, has been proposed by the PMC. After the board sanctions it, the project is set to be funded by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
Sources within the PMC revealed that the proposed facility will feature a robust architectural design consisting of a ground floor plus two additional levels. Out of the total sanctioned budget, approximately Rs 2 crore will be utilised for building the primary structure and necessary civil works. The remaining Rs 3 crore will be utilised to equip the facility with advanced technology, including solar-operated lighting systems, high-efficiency LED lights, and two electric furnaces capable of reaching temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius.
The timeline for the project remains a priority for the civic body. Chief municipal engineer Bindu Rajak said, "Once the project receives its final sanction, we anticipate a construction period of approximately 6 months before the electric crematorium becomes operational for the public."
The shift towards electric cremation is expected to provide substantial relief to residents in terms of both logistics and expenses. Highlighting the efficiency of the modern method, Abhishek Anurag, PMC executive assistant at Gulbi Ghat, said, "Electric cremations cost a nominal Rs 300 and take only about half an hour to complete, offering a significantly faster and more affordable alternative to traditional wooden pyres."
PMC has already functioning electric crematoriums at Gulbi Ghat and Bans Ghat as well. By reducing the reliance on timber, the new facility at Digha Ghat aims to offer a dignified and environmentally conscious solution for the city's growing population.
