SIT set to take Kharat’s custody in sixth case

Nashik: The Special Investigation Team probing cases linked to astrologer Ashok Kharat is set to take him into custody in a sixth case involving allegations of sexual assault and black magic.On Thursday, Kharat was produced before a Nashik magisterial court via video conferencing. The court remanded him in judicial custody till May 6, following a request by the investigating officer, assistant public prosecutor Shailendra Bagade said.Bagade added the SIT is likely to seek Kharat's custodial remand in the sixth case, which also pertains to sexual exploitation and alleged black magic practices.Public prosecutor Kiran Bendbhar said Kharat had already spent five days in police custody in the fifth case. While retaining the right to seek further police custody if required, the investigating officer sought 14 days of judicial custody."He will be taken into custody on Friday in the sixth case registered against him and is likely to be produced before the court through video conferencing," Bendbhar said.The SIT is examining multiple aspects related to the sixth case as part of its wider probe. So far, 11 cases have been registered against Kharat at the Sarkarwada police station, including eight related to sexual assault and black magic, and three involving extortion and cheating. In addition, cases of cheating have been registered against him at Shirdi, Rahata and Shrirampur police stations in Ahilyanagar district, as well as two cases at Sinnar police station under Nashik Rural Police.
