MahaRail targets Dec deadline for three east Nagpur flyovers

Nagpur: East Nagpur, which often experiences severe traffic snarls, can expect major relief and reduced travel time from next year as MahaRail is targeting to complete work on three major under-construction flyovers by December 2026. Traffic volume has increased significantly in east Nagpur due to expansion of residential areas and commercial activity. Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MRIDC), also known as MahaRail, is constructing these flyovers under the supervision of MahaRail MD, Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, to strengthen road network in these areas.
The infrastructure push is expected to decongest key junctions such as Wardhaman Nagar, Nandanvan, Hasanbag and Jagnade Square. Thee works are currently causing heavy traffic snarls in the areas but MRIDC claims that multiple steps are being taken to ensure smooth movement of traffic. The 2.71 km-long IOCL-Nirmal Nagari flyover, one of the longest structures planned in the area, will connect Wardhaman Nagar near the IOCL petrol pump with Nirmal Nagari. It includes an additional ramp towards KDK College. With 77 spans and an 11-metre carriageway, the project is expected to significantly reduce traffic pressure on the Wardhaman Nagar corridor.The Rajendra Nagar-Hasanbag Chowk flyover, which will be 924-metre-long, will link Nandanvan's Rajendra Nagar with Hasanbagh Chowk. Officials believe the flyover will help streamline traffic movement in densely-populated residential neighbourhoods and internal roads.The third major project is the pair of flyovers being constructed at Jagnade Square. The project involves two elevated corridors — one connecting Reshimbagh Chowk with KDK College Square and the other linking Bhande Plot Chowk with Telephone Exchange Chowk. Traffic from several localities in the eastern part converges at this square. Authorities earlier implemented temporary traffic diversions around the square during construction of the flyovers.In addition, MahaRail is constructing a flyover between Azam Shah Chowk and Marwadi chowk, which is expected to be completed by December 2027. The 898-metre-long structure promises to strengthen connectivity in the area. However, a portion of the work related to merging the flyover with the Dahi Bazaar railway overbridge is on hold following guidelines from traffic police to minimise congestion until the Pachpaoli bridge becomes available as a diversion route.Meanwhile, opening of the Lakadganj police station-Wardhaman Nagar flyover on December 15 last year, has brought relief for commuters.
