Action plan prepared to tackle avian influenza
Mysuru: Mysuru zoo has prepared an action plan for prevention, control and containment of avian influenza at Mysuru zoo, Karanji Lake Nature Park and Chamundi Wild Animals Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, Koorgahalli.Mysuru zoo's executive director P Anusha on Wednesday informed that disinfection procedures are being followed at all entry points at these places. Vehicles entering through the facilities, including those carrying visitors, staff, officers and food, pass through disinfectant dips. Foot dips are placed at staff and visitors' entry gates, and all are instructed on their proper use. Foot dips are maintained at each enclosure for animal keepers. Hand sanitisers are used before and after handling animals, animal waste and feed materials.Keepers are trained to identify abnormal clinical signs in animals, and veterinarians monitor enclosures during daily rounds.Employees at Karanji Lake are instructed to immediately report any deaths among migratory birds to senior officers or veterinarians. Serological surveillance of captive and migratory birds is conducted as advised by scientists. Faecal samples from captive birds in the zoo and Karanji lake, as well as from migratory birds, are collected for tests. Regarding feeding practices, live fowls brought to the zoo are physically examined by zoo veterinarians for signs of disease. After examination, the birds are slaughtered and eviscerated.Staff are prohibited from visiting poultry farms, bird sanctuaries or zoos until the threat is resolved. A rapid response team consisting of a veterinarian, lab technician and four keepers is designated to act immediately during any outbreak, and ensure safe disposal and containment measures.
