Meerut: Two people, including a police head constable, were killed after a car plunged into the Hindon river on the Baghpat–Meerut highway early Tuesday, possibly after the driver missed a sharp turn amid dense fog.
The accident occurred around 4 am at the Hindon river bridge under Jani police station limits. Those dead were identified as head constable Rahul Kumar (35) of Bulandshahr, posted in Baghpat, and Ajru (38), the driver. Another constable, Kaushalendra Kumar of Baghpat, and two civilians sustained serious injuries and were admitted to hospitals in Meerut.
Police said the vehicle fell nearly 30 feet into the river after the driver lost control. "Two people died on the spot. The bodies were sent for post-mortem, and the injured are undergoing treatment. An investigation is underway," said SP (traffic) Raghvendra Singh.
Baghpat SP Suraj Rai said the police personnel were returning after completing an investigation in the Partapur area of Meerut, in compliance with a high court order in a pending case. Three acquaintances were travelling with them at the time of the accident.
Rahul Kumar's body was handed over to his family after a ceremonial salute at the police lines. His last rites will be performed in his native village in Bulandshahr. He was a 2011-batch police constable and is survived by his wife and two minor sons.
Rai added that a joint site inspection with NHAI officials was conducted to determine the exact cause of the crash.
