Madurai corporation begins drive to clear waste on Vaigai
Madurai: Madurai corporation has started cleaning the Vaigai river ahead of the monsoon season.
At present, dry parts of the Vaigai are being cleared of dumped waste. Corporation officials said the move comes after complaints from residents regarding dumping and burning of waste on the river.
In addition to clearing waste, corporation officials are issuing notices to establishments situated near the river to segregate waste properly and dispose of it responsibly, or they would be fined and legal action would be initiated against them.
Establishments generating more than 100kg of waste daily have been classified as bulk waste generators. The corporation charges a fee of Rs 1,268 for each tonne of waste from such establishments. Additionally, the public can report complaints on waste dumping by calling 90039 90030 or using WhatsApp number 96001 12811. They can also use the SmartMadurai app to register complaints which will automatically be notified to officials.
