UP’s RLD chief Munna Singh Chauhan succumbs to dengue

LUCKNOW: State unit chief of Rashtriya Lok Dal Munna Singh Chauhan passed away on Sunday morning. He was suffering from dengue, and admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences. Chauhan was 60. The mortal remains of Munna Singh Chauhan were consigned to flames at an inter college in his ancestral village of Maholi in Faizabad’s Sohawal area at around 3.00 pm. Party general secretary and former MP Jayant Chaudhary also attended Chauhan’s funeral in Sohawal.

Both Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and chief minister Akhilesh Yadav have expressed their grief over the death of Munna Singh Chauhan, who was also a former Cabinet minister in Uttar Pradesh.

He started his political career as a grass-root political worker under the leadership of former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh when he was appointed as district president, Faizabad of Lok Dal (Youth Wing). He held several organisational positions and responsibilities at central and state level in Lok Dal. In 2000, Chauhan became the national president of Rashtriya Lok Dal (Youth Wing).

He has been a Member of Legislature Council (MLC), where he raised issues of public importance in the House such as ragging of students and fought the legal battle up to Supreme Court.

Chauhan held assignments on several committees including ‘Petition Committee’ and ‘Committee on Ragging’ in UP Legislative Council. He had held important portfolios as the Cabinet minister for Irrigation (during 2005-06) wherein he pioneered several initiatives & policies such as ‘No Irrigation, No Cess’ policy, inter-linking of canals and rivers for irrigation and production of electricity in the interest of farmers and state.

As an irrigation minister, Chauhan started Chaudhary Charan Singh Vikas Yojna that laid the foundation of developmental works including structuring of ghats, tracks along the canals across the state. He was made RLD’s general secretary in 2007 to strengthen the party organisation. On October 26, 2012, RLD president Ajit Singh appointed him as party's state president in UP.
